Not sure if this should go in the trip report forum or in goat's belly, because it's about riding a Kawasaki KLR650. But I am putting it in the VN750 Gen Disc forum because when I was riding the KLR I was WISHING I was on my Vulcan!

Anyways, I was in CO for the last 2 weeks and got to go on a day ride. I borrowed my niece's KLR650 since I didn't have my VN. It's a pretty nice dual sport bike. VERY easy to ride - kind of like a big dirt bike! All the other bikes were cruisers or sport touring bikes - most of them harleys. A total of 8 bikes went. If you're familiar with southern CO, we took Highway 12 - the Highway of Legends - from Walsenburg to Trinidad, then back north on I25 to Walsenburg. You go through La Veta, Cuchara and Stone Wall. We rode about 150 miles and ate lunch in Trinidad at a really good Mexican food place.

The Highway 12 part is really awesome. Lots of twisties, over Cuchara Pass at about 11,000 feet and through lots of interesting features (lakes, volcanic "dikes", etc.) This route circles East and West Spanish Peaks which are at about 13,000 plus feet in elevation.

We were going to back-track on the return and take the twisties from the other direction, but when we were done with lunch there was a big black cloud and lots of lightening on the mountain, so we shot straight north on I25. Still got into a little rain though.

The speed limit on I25 is 75 mph and I am not going to say what my speedo showed, but let me just say I kept the throttle wide open at one point for 2-3 minutes straight just to keep up with the harleys! (That's when I wished I was on my VN the most!)

If you ever get a chance to ride Highway 12 in CO, I recommend it!

We stay in Cuchara at a "family timeshare". I've been going there for 30 years and my wife longer than that. If you do the Hwy 12 ride, I recommend eating lunch at the Dog Bar in Cuchara. Good sandwiches and pizza. I'd love to do a Pikes Peak run. I am going to trailer out the VN750 next year for sure!

Greetings,

I just got back from an 11 day ride ride to Colorado from Nevada. I put over 3000 miles on my vulcan and the three of us put over three hundred miles each day on the road (only two days were less than 300 miles, 250 and 290 on those days). What a great ride. Got rained on only twice. God has sure blessed us to live in a age of motorcycles. And to ride is Colorado too.

I love living in Colorado. I've been here 10 years and been riding 4 of it. I burn my way through the mountains testing the limits of me ME880s every chance I get.

If anyone finds themselves in Northern Colorado, let me know before you get here and we can zip up to the peak to peak highway or over to steamboat.
