Over the weekend I pulled the engine, lubed splines, ear shave, etc. Somebody installed the shaft circlip 'fix' (collar)... and indeed the shaft will slide inwards a good ways. Previous owner dropped the bike on it's left side but it has run fine and the oil pump is obviously working. I can hear a whizzing kind of noise on that bike I don't hear on the other one - pinpointing the source is difficult, but it definitely is coming from the front left side of the engine, and only does it when rev'd. I've seen no metal grindings in oil changes, so I don't think anything is getting chewed.
I was tempted to yank the side covers off when the engine was out, but had no replacement gaskets. I'm curious ... is correctly fixing the shifter cirlip a major pain and just how far do you have to open the case to do so?
