Just wondering if there are kits or some type for someone that would like to just build a bike? I am meaning mostly where you buy the parts and put it all together...maybe saving money in the process. Is there someplace that specializes in it? I would like to build a simple bike with decent engine and eliminate all the fluff. But, I want to tour with it.
Or should I just say screw it and buy a Nomad or Honda ST.

For a bike of the type you are leaning toward,I would go with plan B,there are all kinds of rolling chassis kits for bobbers and customs,choppers ETC. but i have't seen any for tourers or sport tourers.

You could buy a Classic and add what you want,Bags and windshields and all sorts of accessories are available and you could pick and choose how you like it to look.Just throwing out an idea ,the Classics are generally a lot more affordable than the Nomad.Good luck either way.

I think Big Dog made a nice kit at one time... that was a while back and it seem like it was $14K for the package.

I'll tell you from experiance, you won't save any money building it yourself....compared to just buying a new model off the showroom.

Sure, you can find a used "something", search ebay and junkyards for parts, and build yourself something cool looking...but it won't work better than a new bike, and will, even if it looks cool, still be a used bike.

You can also spend money on custom parts, paint, top line brakes and brake lines, lighting, chroming, etc...but you just end up spending more...and still basicly have a used bike.

True custom bikes that are built from the frame up can be made cheap...but most that start it end up pouring more $$$$ into it than they planned, and it is still a just a used bike...but now likely a single purpose one.

It is fun to do...you'll of course need to have two bikes, one you are building , and one to ride. So...the money again likely better spent on one really nice bike than two used ones.

I have a project bike of my own...have not worked on it for a several years, just lack the funds....but someday....

If you want reliable Touring buy a good bike.

If you want the funn of putting something together and puting your own schwing on it look at the Kiker 5150 Hardnock. Not put my stamp on quality or anything but they come in motor sizes from 125cc to 200cc and are aupposed to have an "on the way" 250 V-Twin.

the 250 has been "coming soon" for a long ass time. I have been wanting a kikker hardknock for a while as a toy to ride to work and have fun with, i heard the quality isnt great but if you know how to weld and do that sort of thing you can beef up all the welds and it should be a good little toy. but i heard some states wont consider them "real" motorcycles because they arent full sized.

This is a nice idea. I've seen the "Factory Five Racing" kits for cars and they look pretty cool and offer great performance for a very good price. If this could come in motorcycle form, it would awesome.

I've thought about designing a frame myself and building something. I have a semi-complete EX500 engine just sitting there... I have a bit of training in CAD also, so I could design before I actually spend money on it... and it certainly seems like I have time right now lol I just finished school and haven't found a job yet.

I'd opt for the ST route. I'm always watching them waiting for the right buy. There are several 1100's all over for reasonable prices. I'm just waiting for that really good one! =)

Google search "Bike in a Box" there are many options.. but pricing is not what you would expect
Yea, that's actually close to what you pay for a kit car from factory five racing... seeing as how a bike requires a LOT less material than a car, that is expensive!

For a while I toyed with the idea of the Bike in a Box choppers. Decent sleection of parts, and it looked like it could be done for about 15k or so. Then the economy took a dump. I'd still like to do one, but for a touring bike, you'd be better served getting one from a reputable dealer. There are a TON oftouring bikes out there, and with the economy still floundering, I'd be surprised if you coupldn't get one that's a year or two old but brand new for a steal from a dealer. May take some searching.

This seems like something that would be good to go in on with a trusted friend, maybe 2. It would certainly ease the financial burden and you'd have someone to help you put it together and bounce ideas off of. The only thing that would be tough is either sharing it once it's complete or deciding on financial logistics.

Sharing a bike is like sharing a woman....just not a good idea.

^ Sorry for not being more specific. Here's what I meant: you start at 15 grand for the bike in a box. You and 3 buddies go in on the boxed bike together. You each throw 3,750 of your own money at it. You pick a garage and all help put it together. While you're learning to build AND helping put it together, the guy who's going to keep it once it's all together, is slowly paying the others back. Nothing out of your pocket in the end unless you want to throw him 500 for using his garage and drinkin' his beer. Either way, you just learned how to build a bike for real cheap. Not saying it'd be easy, just possible. :cool:

I think it not only would be cheaper, but would still give you that "learning experiance"....... to just buy a decent used bike of your choice, take the thing COMPLETELY apart....

.....and then re-assemble it, replacing anything that looks a bit worn.

You end up with a "almost new" bike, with none of the pratfalls of bad engineering that you can get building one from scratch, and you will have intimate knowledge of the entire bike when you are through. Not to mention the knowhow to fix things in the future....along with that feeling of accomplishment of putting the whole thing together by yourself.

I did this years ago by buying two Kawasaki H2's. Swapped parts as needed , bought a few , customized a few, but started with an empty frame, and ended up with a working bike that was show room clean. (they are used bikes, you have to clean every part before you put in back right?)

Total expence was 200 dollars for the bikes, 200 in new parts, about 120 for tires, and a few bucks for incendentals like shop rags, paint, and cleaners.

$540 or so and I sold the bike for $900.
