I have always tested my petcock with the tank off the bike and that's what I was seeing in my head as I was describing it to you.May sound stupid here, but this is what this forum of for. The experienced to help out the ill-experienced!
Could I test the petcock using your method, but leave the drains open on the carbs? My thinking...I’d save time by leaving the two fuel lines from tank on carb but I’d pull the vacuum line (center hose) off at carb end, use syringe to pull vacuum on petcock. Gas would flow into carbs but drain out as they filled almost as a flush. Am I thinking correctly, or will I lose fuel out of the open vacuum port on the carbs as it filled up?
Well. I was able to drain the carbs. Looked like Mountain Dew coming outta there so I know I need a good cleaning. Also I was able to test the petcock. Seems to be functioning with vacuum. The right right side carb seemed to flow faster that the left side, but they both were getting fuel. Next step is to fill carb with seafoam. I investigated this today and it seems very difficult to get to these hoses with the tank on so i am going to get the tank off so that I can do the Seamfoam soaking and then the blowback a coup times. No hurry as the weather here in PA is changing. How long is too long to let seafoam sit in the carbs? Can I put it in and wait a week or should I drain it the next day or two?I have always tested my petcock with the tank off the bike and that's what I was seeing in my head as I was describing it to you.May sound stupid here, but this is what this forum of for. I see no reason why you couldn't test it thru the carb drain.
I strongly recommend that you use a drain hose into a container. A puddle on the floor produces a lot of fumes which could be accidently ignited. I know a guy who was badly burned and missing an arm from fumes igniting in a closed shop.
You could do one carb at a time.
Hey Wolfe,Ive written the proceedure one too many times in threads, so here it is as a sticky.
Often particles get into a carb which SeaFoam and such wont dissolve. Many passages are somewhat "venturied" (just made that up) meaning the stuff gets in, but wont pass...like a bad gallstone.
Theory is : send it out the way it came in. Pure logic.
A quick and easy proceedure that often solves the problem :
1) remove the intake device on a specific carb (be it a stock snorkel or a pod).
2) place a piece of tubing over the drain nipple on the carb and loosen the screw. Drain carb.
3) place and hold a 1 foot or more piece of tubing onto the drain nipple. Blow thru it untill you see it "spitting" from the intake.
4) close the drain, refill carb, and repeat.
This works 7 times outta 10....easy peasey...back on the road.
Added note to my original proceedure...if its really bad, blow it out once plain, then open up the throttle and do it again....
Blowing down through the intake hoses is counter productive. You have to blow it backwards, opposite of the way the gas comes in. Hence, blowback. This is how he explained it to meHey Wolfe,
Good day, brother.
Wouldn't it make more sense to shut the petcock, take the two feed hoses off the gas tank, open the drains on the bottom of the carbs and blow down through the hoses?

BINGO!Blowing down through the intake hoses is counter productive. You have to blow it backwards, opposite of the way the gas comes in. Hence, blowback. This is how he explained it to me

Sorry to hear that, and thanks for your reply. Keep the rubber side down, brother.sorry Bro, but, you're gonna have to speak a lot louder, if you want Wolfie hear you. also, even if Wolfie could hear you, you'd be waiting a really long time for his reply.......sadly, Wolfie passed away a few years ago. 😢
