Hi All,
Seems like this is my 3rd post or so - some of you know me from the yahoo group. Long story short, I couldn't find luggage I liked for a price I liked, so I said screw it and picked up some ammo cans for luggage.

If I recall correctly, they are 17.5*8*12 or so.

Total cost for the project was well under $100 - and that was considering that I bought the cans online - thus paid too much due to shipping.

I plan on painting the cans rustoleum black - and will beef up the lower supports later.

If there's enough interest, I'll take more pictures - namely of the support system when I pull everything apart to paint it.

Since it might be a week till I get good pics of the support system:

I picked up some 1 1/4 1/8 inch angle iron, cut it into 4 pieces.

Got longer screws for the "rail" that goes around the seat - and some spacers to make the bolts sit where they needed to. It seems like the new bolts were 60mm long. The angle iron on the bike is attatched to the 2 bolts on the rail - and is attatched to the bolt that holds the rear shock.

Another piece of angle iron is bolted to the cans - 2.5 inches from the top - the slant of the cans is due to the natural slant of the first piece of angle iron.

Finally, a 3rd piece of steel (I'd run out of angle iron by this time) is attatched from the back of the passenger footpegs to the cans - I'll be replacing this with angle iron - since it's not quite as "stiff" as I'd like it to be.

So far, it seems to work well... I had the bike up to 75 with no noticible vibrations (cans empty) and went and picked up some pop and soymilk from the grocery (2 12 packs and a gallon of soymilk) had plenty of room left for more if I'd wanted to, and though I only had the bike up to 50 on that trip - didn't notice any issues.

Looks good!
I have an ammo box that size holding tow straps, rope, flairs, bottle jack and a bunch of other stuff, in my truck. They hold quite a bit and are quite solid.
Should look really good once painted.
And of course we want to see more pics when ya get them!! :beerchug:

Tomorrow I should be able to take pics and paint the boxes - but that'll all depend on the "urgent" project at work due to my boss's negligence (grr- if you want something done - give it to me a few pieces at at time - NOT a whole months worth 3 days b4 the due date... grrrrr)

So in other words - tomorrow there'll probably be pictures of the mounting setup (and I think I'm gunna mod the boxes so there's a rear hinge instead of double clasps) - sunday there'll probably be painted pics.

Yeah yeah I know.... :worthless

EDIT: Not happening this weekend - project at work took too long (hell - there's more to do still but I wasn't willing to give up my whole weekend). Besides, It's raining and nasty - not that great for painting (paint fumes indoors = angry wife = need ride = not possible if dissasembled ;-) )

Ammo cans won't be painted this weekend either.

I dumped the bike on my way to school yesterday - I'm ok, the bike is ok, but I'm bruised and the bike needs some new parts. The left side ammo can took the brunt of the impact - I'm convinced I would have been hurt way worse had the cans not been on there (and the bike definitely would have been).

Locked up my front wheel in the rain - went sliding for 30 feet - but no roadrash at all - just some bruises and soreness.

Sorry to hear about that Curtis, hope you and the bike won't need much to be back in top shape!

Ah, that was you over at Y!.

Glad things didn't turn out too bad for ya.
No doubt the cans saved things from being much worse.

Heal soon and good wishes on getting the bike back on the road.

Yup - that was me over there...

Thanks for the well wishes guys.

Now I just need to find some good raingear to replace the old stuff.

I got Frog Togs last year, Good luck has followed and haven't got caught in the rain since. Knock on wood.

I got frog togs as well. I had a pair I used for fishing. After melting the right leg on the pipes I went out and bought some strips of velcro. I use a piece around my ankles and just below the knees. They keep the togs off the pipes and also keep em from riding up my calf. Other than being heat sensitive, they work fantastic!!

Thought this thread had died!

I got some frog toggs - first the woven kind (the new more expensive kind) and they leaked a lil bit on the knee - probably would have been find standing still, but at 70mph there was just a hint of moisture (not acceptable since it was raining really light) - all that from raingear that didn't pack nearly as small as the "classic" Ft's.

Ended up getting the classic Ft's - and wouldn't ya know, the tags are still on (in the luggage) since in rainy oregon it hasn't rained since I got the toggs.

P.S. The look of the cans unpainted is starting to grow on me - and there's some mech. stuff I need to take care of (general tuneup) - so the bags might never get painted ;-), besides, there's the one with road rash and I want that reminder clear as day to me.
