Had one of those moments you'd rather avoid on my ride home today. The vehicle behind me was yo-yoing between too close and way behind me. As we approached an intersection where there is a lot of traffic in and out of a large subdivision, the Dodge pickup in front of me hit his brakes. It wasn't easy to see his lights because the sun was at his back and he had those aftermarket chrome "Ram" covers on his tail lights. I had just checked my rear view mirrors and the following vehicle was several seconds behind me. I had no trouble stopping with plenty of room. Then I heard the squeal of sliding rubber behind me.

The road shoulder along this particular road is wide enough for a car to travel, and I was preparing to go in that direction to avoid becoming a bumper sandwich. But when I looked over my right shoulder, that is where the vehicle behind me was. There was oncoming traffic on my left, so I stayed put. Fortunately, the driver was able to stop before they got to me. The pickup turned left (they rarely use turn signals in Louisiana), I made a "what were you thinking" body gesture to the vehicle behind me, and continued on. The vehicle stayed well back for a mile or two, but eventually got too close again. I "waved" the driver back, they backed off, and I gave the thumbs up "thank you" sign. It didn't last long, and they were too close again.

I was looking for a convenient place to pull over and let them pass when the driver turned onto a side road. I'm not sure, but I suspect she was on her cell phone when she almost rear ended me.

glad to hear it went as well as it did FC,did any body on here ever here of the pyramid of danger,here is the way it works at the bottom of the pyramid are several times we do something without thinking or use the old I've done it before excuse and nothing bad happens,next layer up is near misses and then after that comes the two or three minor accident layer with the one or two with injury accidents and we know what the top of the pyramid is serious injury or death. this is not something I dreamed up one day but was taught to us in our annual safety retraining when I worked in the mining industry.I have observed it to be true in daily life and gives us something to think about .

Good to hear that everything worked out. This is the reason I added a second super bright LED brake light at the top of the sissy bar. It is only activated by the brake, so it gets their attention. It works just as well as the third brake light on a car and I've had numerous comments that it is effective. When they get too close, I just blink it and they back off.

Good to hear that everything worked out. This is the reason I added a second super bright LED brake light at the top of the sissy bar. It is only activated by the brake, so it gets their attention. It works just as well as the third brake light on a car and I've had numerous comments that it is effective. When they get too close, I just blink it and they back off.
I replaced the two stock brake lights with LEDs. When brakes are first applied, they flash rapidly for five seconds and then stay on. May add some more LEDs when I get my hard bags installed. If folks aren't paying attention, not sure what would work. Stupidity kills, but not always the stupid ones.

I`m glad to hear you are ok FC. It`s hard to protect yourself from others stupidity, that`s for sure.

I gotta tell ya - you were way more forgiving than I would have been. If someone almost runs me down and then keeps riding my ass, the next red light they're gonna get a visit at their window. Simple enough. Not to try and fight or anything but to ask them WTF their issue is. Usually just putting the bike on the kickstand is enough to wake some people up IME. The only flaw in the "pulling off" method is that unless there isa lane dedicated for that turn, you run the risk of getting swatted as you slow down for the turn. And before I accidentally start a debate I gotta say that each situation is different, and in the end all that matters is that we get out of it safe.

FC - glad your situation didn't take one of those horrible turns we hear so much of lately.

Thanks. I was lucky, and in the driver's defense, she was taking the shoulder to avoid hitting me. I've talked to a couple of folks about proper driving techniqe around motorcycles. Trouble is, I'm not the most self controlled person, and know that if my temper is high, my tongue will say things that are not constructive. I have to be in the right frame of mind to have a shot at making the encounter a positive one. If I say something offensive to the recipient, all I've done is add to or create a negative attitude toward motorcyclists, and that is not good. I consciously chose not to speak with that driver because of my frame of mind, and, based on her demonstrated driving skills, I didn't think it would have any effect.

Yes, it does. Almost got whiplash when I turned my head to see if my exit route to the right shoulder was still open. And since you are a medical professional, you'll understand why my anal sphincter went into tetany!

Glad to hear you are ok. I think everyone should know how to drive around bikes they are not the same as cars. you ever see anyone on a truckers ass? it should be part of the driving test!!!!!

Thanks. Yes, I've seen folks "drafting" truckers on the interstate to improve their gas mileage. One guy died here a while back when the trucker hit his brakes to slow down for congestion. He probably didn't even know the guy was behind him. The following vehicle was so close that he sheared off the cab of his small pickup, and, I assume his head, before he could hit the brakes. They said he died instantly. The pickup lodged against the rear wheels of the trailer.

Well, I removed my bumper after the air bag deployed; didn't want that to happen again. But I was thinking about going through the large openings in his bumper if all other options failed. Didn't think about using my rear wings though. If I'd kicked in the afterburner and pulled the stick back hard, it might have gotten me out of there, but could have blown pavement into the path of oncoming vehicles. I didn't want to create an accident in the process of avoiding one. I was in an ion drive only zone, so my options were limited.

I recently installed both headlight and brake light modulators, and also make frequent use of my 4 way hazard flashers. But, if someone is not paying attention, like pretty much anybody on a cell phone, all the lights in the world aren't going to do you any good.

Back several years ago, while riding a bicycle in the bike lane, a guy pulled out from a side street, went right past the stop sign, and pulled clear across the bike lane before stopping. (it is normal for people to run stop signs here, they fly right past them, and pull right up to the edge of the street before stopping, and if nothing is coming, they don't stop at all, just slow down, then floor it) Anyway, I had to slam on the brakes, and missed hitting this guys front fender by inches. I jumped off the bike, and headed for him. He panicked, put his cheesy little Honda CRV in reverse, floored it, and backed right into a brick wall, knocking down the wall, and seriously damaging the back end of his vehicle. I jumped out of the way, and he took off. I never saw him or that vehicle again. I was really pissed at first, but just had to laugh because of all the damage he had done. I got back on my bicycle and rode off. From that point on, I made a habit of always carrying a hammer in a holder on my belt while riding a bicycle. Jerry.
