I recently got a '94 VN750. When I role off the throttle, the bike slows abruptly rather than smoothly. This happens no matter what gear I am in, although it is more pronounced at lower gears.

Is this normal? and if not, what is the cause and how do I fix it?

(It is possible that I simply just don't know how to handle the throttle very well yet, but am curious whether it might be indicate of something being wrong with the bike.)

I'd be curious to know how easily you can roll your bike around when you're in neutral...I'm thinking that your rear brake may be set wrong, and when you're rolling off the throttle, the brake shoes are just taking over. Find a flat spot in your driveway or garage, and just see if you can "walk" the bike in neutral...it should feel heavy, but not impossible, to move and mostly it should just be a matter of overcoming inertia.

That was my first thought as I read the post too.
Ya could also put the bike on the center stand and see how easily the wheel spins.

Would that that were easy!! I can't get the bike on the centerstand without assistance. :( But it's definitely a more straightforward way to test the rear brake (so, you know what I was doing when I was struggling with the cable...).

I am able to role it around in neutral. I'll try rolling the wheel on its own next.
It'll be interesting to hear the result of the wheel spin - you may able to muscle past the brake with your legs. I don't think it needs to be a lot off, either (i.e., the brake shoes can be just a tad too tight and it'll bog ya down). Hey, and good luck getting her on the centerstand! :BLAM:

Have someone sit on the bike on the centerstand and pivot the front tire off the ground and spin it too. You should get some shhhsshing noise from the front but it should turn pretty freely.

If you are new to the 750, it engine brakes pretty soundly. It just might be normal. Try another thing. Get up to speed on the bike and simultaneously pull in the clutch and let off the throttle. Does the bike slow abruptly? Probably not. If not, I think you are feeling the normal engine braking of this model bike when you just let off the throttle with the clutch engaged.

Okay. tried the wheel rolling thing.

When I rotate the front tire, I hear some scrapping, as if some metal part was rubbing against another. None-the-less, it still rotates pretty well.

When I rotate the rear tire, I don't hear any noise, buy the wheel is much heavier and does not spin as freely as the front tire.

When riding, if I roll of the throttle with the clutch fully disengaged, the vehical will slow smoothly without any abrupt decelleration.
