Okay, first let me start with the problem.the bike gets spark if one coil is hooked up.but if i hook both coils up there's nothing. I've tested both coils and they both work. Pickup coils work because if they were bad i wouldn't get any spark at all....right? The only other thing is.....the cdi box....which is more than what i paid for the bike.and if i buy one does it matter what year? Or is it okay as long as its a vn750 cdi box? This is driving me crazy. I'm a Sgt at arms in a little club....without a bike.please help....does anyone know what's wrong????
I bought a 1988 vn 750,33k miles. I'm the 3rd owner and its like new. Clean title. ... paid 300$

I have seen this happen on a VN700. I traced the problem to a short in the wiring harness where the previous owner had botched it. The short was in the "hot" side of the wiring which forced the current from the ignitor (CDI) box to discharge to both coils at once. USe a VOM, remove the connectors from the ignitor box and trace backwards. If you opt to replace the box, any VN700/VN750 box will work.
