I physically moved my solid blue wire to the empty slot on the connector over a year ago and bike is still running strong without issues. As long as you have a good battery, you should be good to go.

I'm not sure about the fuse popping but you can check all the ground connections to make sure they are good. As far as the RPM, my bike has always ran 5k RPM at 70mph.

I have my plug upward and put 3 coats of liquid electrical tape on it to prevent water and other objects getting in there. I did also put dielectric grease with the plug as an extra precaution.

Sorry to hear the battery died. Think of the bright side. At least nobody could drive the bike away since the key was left in the bike. We can call it Theft Preventative Maintenance.
