Fuel gauge stopped working

Hi All-

My fuel gauge stopped working, it always says the tank is full. Occasionally it will slowly move over to whatever level I'm actually at, but then almost immediately it will slowly go back to the full mark (or it will start to move to the left, then quickly move back to the right)..

I know this could be a few things (the cable from the tank to the gauge, or the level sensor itself), but was wondering if anyone knows of any known issues with the fuel gauge on the VN750..

Thanks!

Maybe you bike is blessed with a perpetually full tank of gas. So the gauge could be correct, and your gas is never used up. Boy, would that be nice, huh!

No known issues with the fuel sensor.
It's not like the stator/RR, or the "coffee grinder" noise, or the ACCTS.

Mine never worked from day 1 ... but mine always read empty. I was able to fix it by soldering together the broken connection inside the sending unit. My guess is yours is shorted somewhere or the float arm is stuck. Start by unplugging the sending unit at the back of the tank, if the guage goes to E then the problem is in the sending unit, if it doesn't move it's in the wiring or guage itself.

It is more likely the wire that comes from the sending unit. It may have a bare spot on the wire that sometimes grounds and keeps it from working right. When ever the wire is not grounding (shorting) to the frame it works just momentarily. Or the wire is somehow broken in two and sometimes it connects and the guage works for a bit.

Does our fuel gauge ever work? Mine reads full for about 100 miles, then goes to empty in 14.:D

Mine works rather close to what fuel I have in the tank.

Surprisingly, so doe mine.

Mine reads full for about 50-55mi, then 1/2 tank at about 100-110mi, then lines up with the red empty mark at about 145-150mi. and is ready to start missing at any second and be put on reserve...
Rev. 8-17-08... Got 115 mi to exact 1/2 tank reading today, the best since I installed the 110 tire...
Have a good one ...Old Dog...
