michiganteddybear also make sure that the last plate is installed one tab off from the rest. don't know what it would do if that plate was installed the same as the rest, but Kawasaki has it one tab off from the rest

Spockster Neither the oil or the clutch adjustment would matter, as long as the trans is in neutral.

I think you're on the right track looking for the source of the noise on the right side.

Without something dragging internally on that side and making noise, I'd be checking the new battery and the starter.

Might need to look at the position of the balance shaft, make sure it's not being forced too tight toward the right or left side. If that's even possible, but it seems something has changed since it was last running/starting ok. I know there is a spacer involved on the left side with the balance damper, but it's been a while since mine was apart.

I have not had the clutch side apart on mine, but all the gear teeth on that side need to be aligned. The starter, balance shaft, and clutch basket.

Nope, since you can just hold in the clutch to start the bike even if the rest of the plates were pretty stuck together.

Did you check your clutch cable adjustment?

Motor won’t turn fast enough to start & noise on right side

The short story:

I wonder if wiping the clutch plates with paper towels before reinstalling them removed too much oil and that is the reason the motor won’t start.

The long story:
Early this summer, I deduced that the stator had gone bad on my 2006 vn750 with ~23,000mi. I also figured I would save lots of money by making repairs myself… I have since decided sanity may be worth more than savings from shop bills…

While the bike would be down, I thought I would go ahead and clean the carbs, replace the balance dampers, and drill the clutch basket.

Once my Clymer manual, gaskets, dampers, rebuilt stator, & clutch holder tool arrived and the motor was out, the work went smooth considering my lack of wrenching experience… The carbs were a real pain to remove/reinstall, the motor a back breaking half day struggle to remove but installed fairly easily.

I believe the parts were reassembled and torqued correctly & all wiring was reconnected. I got a new AGM battery, filled the cooling system & motor oil, then prayed that she would fire up… No luck.

I opened the oil fill cap while cranking and there was no noise from there; I was worried that the stator and rotor might be rubbing. A possible new noise was coming from the other side, at the clutch cover…

The only thing I come up with is that the clutch plates are not wet enough with oil, even though as I cranked, I worked the clutch lever and the motor has been filled with oil for a couple days now.

Another piece of info – I did not replace the 30mm clutch hub nut with a new one as is recommended, only reinstalled the old one as tight as I dared turn it while holding with the clutch tool (my torque wrench only goes up to 85ft/lbs).

I am very hesitant to pull the motor again to check where the issue is, especially if the problem does not require it. If the masters of vn750 knowledge here can’t assure me that the fix is simple, I will start by tilting the bike and removing the clutch cover to look for rubbing parts & metal shavings…

Thanks to all contributors here who provide so much advice & help to guys like me. It is only with your help that I have previously lubed splines, up-sized tires, replaced spark plugs, and performed other maintenance-type operations with confidence.
