yup start with changing the plugs ngk or ngk iridium are recommended here other brands do not seem to fair as well in these bikes
wouldn't hurt to check your voltage on the red wire of the ignition coils with the key is on if it is below 12 volts you may benefit from the ignition coil relay mod that is layed out in the electrical section

The DPR7IX-9 advantage: The advantage is (they claim) "Longer life, lower fuel consumption, smoother running, Improved ignition efficiency-giving enhanced power and acceleration" The part that matters really is the "improved ignition efficiency" as iridium can "spark hotter" at a lower voltage. Given our feeble electrical system, anything that uses less power is good. The part number is 7803 at Advanced Auto. The plug is the DPR7EIX-9.
Worn plugs cause hard starting.

Clan Urdnot needs your support!
I am the founding member of the Urdnot Clan I live in Columbia county, Wisconsin I am in the most brutal, painful sort of love with my 1990 VN750. it seems to have a mind of its own though I'm sure that's just my lack of experience with this machine. It has carried me through the most unimaginable events but seems unwilling to perform relatively mundane tasks. I just put on about 3600 miles for a total of 37k and change on the machine. within a week of buying it I rode through a bona-fide supercell thunderstorm with only minor issues and now some three months later, after having the stator replaced it seems to have picked up a misfire. I suspect the plugs are going bad because they have been on it since before I got the bike. I let it run for a while in the driveway tonight and smelled raw hydrocarbons afterward as opposed to burnt metal. I know the difference in odors. a slight misfire was noticeable with slow increase in rpms. it ran rough this morning so I elected to forgo it for my daily commute. cold and hot starts have been a consistent issue with this bike but on a warm summer day it would start in three cranks or less. I just want this to be the norm and not the exception. any advice is welcome.
