Knifemaker If the front switch works thusly - as the lever is pulled in the "pin" extends out, activating the brake light.....you can just file a bit off the end of the pin so it extends sooner. Take very little off at a time and check how it functions.

FieroGT42 I checked someone else's and it's about the same as mine. I guess that's how they are so I'll just deal with it and fix my rear brake spring instead. Thanks. Don't waste your time looking Wolfie. I could use a cheap choke cable though.

Wolfie Yeah...its a pin that acctuates a microswitch....you either try to clean it, or replace it....lemme look tomorrow....I might have an extra one....

....remind me if I forget....I been getting very forgetful lately....

kc2dgq i would spray both switches with WD-40 to make sure they are moving freely before you go messing with altering anything.

I think the little pin is spring loaded from behind, inside the switch, to push out when the lever is pulled and brakes applied. No way to shim that.

FieroGT42 Yeah, I looked at it today and the rear brake spring obviously keeps it from breaking the switch. I might fab something up.

Is the front brake switch a push or pull type? If it pushes, I could just shim it a little. Yeah, it only takes 1/2" or so of travel at the tip of the handle, but at that point my brakes engage more than I want if I'm just flashing my lights.

Wolfie The front brake switch at the MC is removable with just 2 small phillips screws....and as Hoss stated, could just need a good cleaning (I suggest CRC 3-36)....the light should actually come on before the front brake engages....the rear is adjustible....but still, the light should come on before the brake engages....front OR rear....

Also, my back brake switch is adjusted all the way out and it still doesn't engage unless I stomp it. I'm thinking about replacing the switch's spring with something shorter. Can I just use some strong wire or does it have to be a spring?
I am just going from a blown up parts diagram in the Clymer manual, no "hands on experience" for me working on the master cylinder.
It appears to be a simple on/off switch with no adjustments possible.

It is strange that your front brake engages before the brake light comes on.
I just checked and my front brake switch clicks and the brake light comes on as soon as the end of the lever moves a half inch or so, definitely before any hydraulic pressure is felt or brake is applied.

Possibly the switch is sticky and needs to sprayed with some electrical contact cleaner or brake cleaner, or it is worn out and simply needs to be replaced.
