Crobins365 If the bike was able to restart, now you can test your charging system. Pull the seat and put your voltmeter on the battery terminals (pos and neg, in that order). As the rpms increase, your voltage should jump up well above the 12.7 or so the battery has at idle. If that happens,....I guess consider the dead battery a fluke!

Oops, sorry, I should have been more specific. There are three leads coming off the stator - they are yellow and hook up to the wiring harness, and eventually hook up to the regulator. There should be a bullet-connector (male metal end into female connector (metal inside, rubber outside)) that you can pull apart. Use your multimeter -set at ohms - and put the pos and neg leads from the multimeter on your stator leads. I don't think it matters which (+ or -) is on which, but you just want to check all three across each other (LEAD 1 against 2; LEAD 1 against 3; LEAD 2 against 3, etc.).

I can take pics this evening if it'll help - I can show you better visually than I can explain in words. You can also check the Gallery for Charlie's (Easy Rector) pics of his fused stator leads - that'll give you an idea of what you'll be looking for.

Crobins365 Could be a bad battery, bad regulator, or a bad stator.

Easiest thing to start with is to try to recharge the battery on a trickle charger. If it charges, then you can eliminate that as the culprit.

Then, put the battery back in, turn on the engine, and with the rpms up, you should see the voltage spike around 14.5v or so. If it doesn't do that, then it's definitely your charging system. However, it could just be the regulator. The way to rule out the stator is to test the leads with a multimeter - someone can correct me on this, but I think the acceptable resistance is between .3 - .5 ohms between any two leads.

Stator going bad???

Yesterday was just like anyother day. Got up in the morning Rode the bike to work, after work rode 25 miles to waukesha for dinner, then rode 35 miles back home, all with out an incident (the bike started up when the engine was warm). When I got back home and turned the bike off, 5 minutes later i wanted to run to the gas station and the bike would not start, it seems that the battery was dead ( the battery is a M.F. and it is only 3 months old) Could my problem be that the stator is going?????????
