new rider 9984 they didnt change thickness they just counter sunk the inner (inside tire) surface of the valve stem hole i was just looking at that today when changing my tire i have an 86 (metal stem) rim and an 96 (rubber stem) rim

Wolfie Its not recorded Hoss, but on 85/86 (mebbe even later) models, they had a mechanical stem....later models had the rubber insert stem....with rubber inserts, the "slot" wont work on the older rims (slot too thin), ergo, must be thicker rims....my whiz of a local Harley fabricator (works on Brit and Jap too) said that too when I brought the 90s back...and I quote "the earlier ones must have had thicker rims, because these 90s work on most Jap rims"....so logic calls out that the earlier models had thicker rims, at least at the stem. But I can only speak of the US versions.
The thing to find out then would be as to when Ma Kaw went from mechanical stems to the rubber ones....I bet the rims changed then also....good research project fer ya brother...

OlHossCanada Wolfie where did you learn that the 85/86 model wheels are thicker?
Just personal experience, or is it recorded somewhere?

I have never heard anything about this before.

Any idea how much thicker the aluminum is, or how much difference in weight between the '85/'86 model wheels vs. '87 - 2006?

Thanks Wolfie, you saved me there. Expect a tire change to come up in a few months, now I'll purchase 45's vs 90's.

Wolfie Not fer nuthin....just thought of this...when buying a used VN rim...get 85/86....more monet for scrap, lol....or, if a keeper, a lot sturdier than later models...

Wolfie Angled valve stems....and I had posted this elswhere too...when changing over stems...caution....early VN had thicker rims than the later ones. Instead of going to a 90 degree, use the 45 degree...its enough to serve the purpose, and is also less influenced by centrifical forces....dont use 90s...use the 45s....90s wont even fit into 85/86 rims....you cant make the bend unless you mill the wheel....45s will.

I feel aftermarket 90 degree offset valve stems are great ! I WILL install them at next tire change.

(Learned from this forum, as all info/tips & ALL my knowledge of MY VN750 !
