cegodsey | Ignition switch. Makes sense, seeing how that is where the problem started. Other than that, it sounds like either the ground isn't grounding, or the positive isn't, um, positively? The bike won't run without the battery, and it sounds like this is what is happening. Ignition switch could definitely do that. |

global_recon | 14 miles down the road, Paul is at a rest stop and he thinks he knows the problem. The ignition switch issue is causing the bike to shut off as it is going down the road and when that happens, the voltage spikes to 17 or 18 volts. We're going to try to get the bike back to Winston-Salem in a pick-up truck. |

emergency roadside assistance requested Hey guys! This is Paul's sister writing on behalf of Paul. 100 miles into his trip, he had a problem and he wants to get some advice. The bike was running fine, although he still has the bungy on the key because the ignition switch fix didn't hold. When he stopped to get gas, he shut the bike off and then when he tried to start it, the engine wouldn't turn over. He said it almost seemed as if the battery didn't have enough juice to turn the engine over, but the volt meter is reading 12.6 volts with the bike off. He let the bike sit for 1/2 hour, and then tried again and had the same problem. After that, he tried jump starting it and wasn't able to start it because he couldn't get the bike up to adequate speed. Immediately after that, he tried the starter button again, and the engine started fine. At 5000 rpm, the engine is putting out 13.6 volts so it seems like the charging system is working. He shut off the engine and tried again and it started fine. He decided (rather than turn around) to continue his trip to Florida, but will be calling back to see if anyone had any ideas. Thanks a lot for any input! |
