Lack of confidence, and especially time is my issue also. When I owned my VTX it had a Mustang on it. It was wonderful.
I am just about to schedule my VN750 stock seat at meancitycycles.com in NC and have them mod it. The VTX guys swore by his work, and he told me he could pretty much duplicate the sitting area shape of the VTX Mustang I had. So, I think it is worth the $$$ to get it done right. If I do it, I'm guessing, and my tailbone might not appreciate that.

AJCruzin If you don't trust yourself to do it right DIY, then send ti to the guy at greatdaytoride.com. He works magic - shaving, foam replacement (with better foam), gel inserts, etc. Damn good prices too.

slimvulcanrider http://www.diymotorcycleseat.com is the best info you will be able to find on how to mod your stock seat... read every page on that websight before you begin... it will answer what ever question you might have... if it doesn't send me a pm and I can probably answer it. I have built several custom seats for the VN750, as well as done a few moded stock seats for several other brands of bikes.

weh44att I did what you are saying you want to do. First a good stapler will help, 1'4 staples to reatach the cover. Got a electric knife and cut down into the seat starting from the rear
of the seat to the front. You want the shape of a concaved tractor seat. This takes all the pressure off of your tail bone. This will be a ruff cut, use a sanding disc on a drill and fine shape the seat to a nice smooth shape. The cut into the seat is about two inches deep starting at the rear and tapering less as you get to the front of the seat. Oh yes the foam get sort of messy, goes everywhere. The original seat has about 4 inches of foam on it.

M_Angell the cover is just the staples and buttons. i am still workin on mine, and it isnt really hard to reshape the foam, at least i didnt find it to be. right now i am in the process of designing an inlay for my new cover made from scratch.

Stock Seat Construction

I am considering modifying the shape and padding on my stock seat. It absolutely kills my tailbone/lower back in less than 100 miles. Does the stock seat have adhesive holding the cover to the padding? Or is it just held in place by the "couch buttons" and staples underneath?
I'd love to have a Mustang, but can't find one I can afford. I've thought about sending it to be reshaped/repadded, but that ain't cheap either. So, I am thinking of trying it myself. I had a Mustang seat on my VTX and I would love to duplicate that on this bike. I have never done anything like it before. Any wisdom to share before I possibly dig in?? Or should I just knuckle under and pay to have it done?
This is the guy many of the VTXers swear by, and he has done VN750 seats before:
