One1 I fixed it, it actually did flip it's polarity. I removed the magnet and turned it upside down, put it back in the can.... runs perfectly! The break was diagonally, and getting all gap out was tough. Once I was able to get it close I put it in and the result was what I originally posted about. Later today I didn't want to give up and flipped the Magnet and BAM...... it ran in the proper direction. Maybe a tip for the future if someone has that issue.

One1 Wish it could have just kept going forward! This was the result of the magnet glue failing and spinning one magnet into the other inside the can. I tried to set it back in position, no dice. Maybe i should break the other side and see if it runs forward. Lol.

michiganteddybear it didnt flip polarity, but instead turned one 2 pole magnet (normal) into 2 magnets, 2 poles each.

armature is wound for a pair of magnets, now you have 3, and yes it does screw up the field

btw, never, ever, under any circumstances, subject a permanent magnet starter to a sudden shock such as a hammer blow.. the above picture is a good representation of what can happen. if you feel you need to tap your starter, grab your hammer, get into position to deliver the blow, then grab the head of the hammer and hit the starter with the handle! I used to do that all the time on an old lincoln that had a permanent magnet starter that had brushes that where hanging

Every seen a cracked magnet flip a starters polarity?

Happened to me tonight. Cracked magnet in the can made the starter run backwards. Thought I had lost a 1 way bearing till I realized the starter was running anti-clockwise. It must be really screwing with the field.
