SergheiS Well, after weeks of being stubborn I finally gave in & did the pickup mod. It starts without problems after getting gas now, & starts easier in all cases. Why the issue only presented itself after getting fuel I have no idea, but, I guess we're all good for now...

Probably one of the easiest to do and I did notice a difference. Also clean the ignition switch if you haven't already.

michiganteddybear if I recall, I turned mine counter clockwise (looking in from the pickup coil access cover)

SergheiS I did replace the spark plugs, it didn't help much. I tried starting it with the fuel tank open, same scenario. Just had to let it chill a bit. I've ordered an AGM battery, and now planning to do the pickup mod some point this week, so let's see if that makes a difference of any sort....
One question, I know I might have to rotate the motor to get the plate next to the coils, which way should I rotate? Clockwise or counter? Also, should the bike be cold for this or is warm fine?

cglennon Iridium spark plugs and/or K&N drop-in air filter replacement fixed mine. Not sure which one or both are needed since I did both upgrades at the same time. Problem went away immediately and now going on 8 years since with no problems. Added a little extra overall performance as well. Plus, easy upgrade.

Knifemaker Also should point out a weak battery can cause starting problems too...switching from the wet cell that comes with the bike to a good AGM battery cured my starting issues...(which were only noticed after filling up or stopping a short time). I doubt your issue is related to the gas tank..

DenverDiesel I set my pickup coils to 0.018" and just barely crack the throttle when cranking and it starts hot perfect every time.

jeffm591 Yes try pickup coil mod and relay mod. Made a world of difference
