Did some poking around tonight with the throttel cables. As it turns out, the decel cable is broken! That would certainly explain the cable not retracting!
Time for another part order!

|Thorn||The throttle cable lengths can both be adjusted at the carbs.|

|Spockster||Might pay to unhook the cable and see if it's binding.|

Found the leak; it's at the left mounting tab on the tank. Trying to seal it now with the tank sealer mastic.
I noticed something when I was trying to adjust the play out of my throttle and lubricating the cables. My decel cable (at the carb) isn't retracting into the cable sleeve. It just bends. I adjusted it as tight as I could at the throttle but it still seems to be doing it. Can I adjust the slack out of it at the carb side?

That's the weird part. There is no connection at the base of my tank at all.
It had gotten a custom paint job at one point. I suppose maybe the body shop person had cut it out and filled it in?

The nip on the black cover under the tank is just a blank, serves no purpose except we use that for our carb vent on earshaves. The cover is over the fuel sending unit.
Should be one hose at the rear of the tank for the tank vent. On most bikes the hose just hangs below the frame, on Calif. models there's a charcoal canister involved, with more hoses and an extra hose nip on the tank.
I'd just get a hose on the tank vent and see how that affects the gassy smell.

Thanks again so much for the help on this. Had two nice long rides the last few days with no issues so far with the new petcock installed.
Another question; I'm noticing a gas smell around the front left side of the tank. The odd part is there are no leaks at the petcock and the tank seems to have no cracks (I checked already based on some other threads here). My tank is a little odd, it looks like the stock tank, but I don't have anything at the base near the seat bolt. No hose. And, there is nothing attached to the nipple that comes out of the center of the underside of the tank where the black box is.
Is it possible it is venting from underneath and causing some gas to form on the underside of the tank and run to the left side as it is on the side stand?
There are no drips that I can see anywhere.

So, even with this part you could leave it "on" since it shouldn't flow without vacuum?
Why did they change the PRI/ON/RES to ON/OFF/RES after 86-87 but keep the vacuum activation? Seems confusing.

If it has three ports, it's vacuum op, unless it came from a 3 cyl. with carbs.
Mine only has on/off/res, has three ports, is vacuum op.
