What he said. Tolerances *are* pretty tight. Even so, it's definitely possible to do the tuxedo mod properly as long as one is patient (anal?) enough to do the job *correctly*. The odds of success improve significantly if you purchase the parts you don't feel comfortable about fabricating. At an absolutely minimum, I'd recommend purchasing the steel plate rather than trying to roll your own: if the holes aren't drilled correctly, or the steel you elect to use is too thin, or, or, or, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

ubertalldude Good link for you in my signature (look for "dampers") which has all the parts you'll need to replace while you have it apart.

Iceshot, the tuxedo mod is a lot more than a lot of people are willing to do. I didn't do it on mine while I had the factory stator out. It might be worth listing the potential risk and difficulty of the mod when recommending it rather than saying it MUST be done

Even doing the balance dampers isn't a NECESSARY job, but it is a ridiculously good idea considering the cost and potential time savings. I have a hard time saying the same about the tuxedo after seeing how many people on here have had misalignment issues which ate the stator/rotor. Just my 2 cents

meathead1465 when you pull off the stator and the big cover behind it there is the flywheel and the gear to the left of that is where the dampers are.
the gear in the picture is just to the left of the flywheel and it is left handed bolt holds it on

mvdijck ok, do i have to remove the right side cover also? Or on the left side only the stator, the rotor and then the left hand balancer gear?
put in the 6 dampers and put it back?

Iceshot Do yourself a HUGE favor and modify the stator cover to allow it to be serviced next time "without" needing to remove the engine. For less than $100 and a little extra work / effort on your part (see link below), this is a no brainier must while the engine is off the frame.
