Here is a recent thread for checking the AC voltage coming from the stator to the three yellow wires. It seems more direct than the procedure in the verses.

|rubyrick||Go to the Vulcan Verses and learn exactly how to check the R/R and the Stator. You will be able to diagnose the problem then.|

|tickman||Did a check today and disconnected everything RR and the 3 yellow wires and cranked up and the volts were around 15-16 volts on pairing the 3 wires differently and increased when reving up so i m leaning towards the RR now|

|tickman||I going to try tomorrow to disconnect all the yellow wires before testing stator , battery is still not fully charged so I will pick it up tomorrow I was testing yellow wires pluged in so that may have gotten a bad reading I hope|

|tickman||I tested the three yellow wires still connected black on battery and red on yellow and got readings like 1.5 or so with the bike off and the key at off. Is this mean its bad or am i missing a step like do I dissconect the battery or the RR . Right now everything is plug in..|

|tickman||Ok you said stator not starter. Is the hard to change out pulling the case off. What about the RR|

|tickman||Does the starter also charge the bike like a alternator on a car. and if so whats the best choose for the money|

Yes, normal for the R/R to get hot, especially because you were idling and not moving so there was no flow of air to cool it down.
Could be the charging system after all. Very low voltage and not near enough charge while idling. I thought you had previously stated that the battery was good and held a charge, but after re-reading your posts it does sound like the battery takes a charge and then dies after you've been riding. That sounds like the stator to me now.

|tickman||I cranked it up after relocating the RR on the side and I had to jump it off with the 4-wheeler. It started out with 11.4 volts before hooking up then droped to 10.50 after turning on to start up with the head light on and then after running and reving up to 4 k it only reached 11.0 and then died and shut the bike off at idle running for 5 mins. It seems not to be the battery but the charging system on the bike. I pulled the ground off while taking the RR off and put back on. I alittle lost now. THe RR was getting hot is that normal thanks|

|OlHossCanada||X2 to rubyrick and km on this one. The starter and battery are the place to start.|
