B K R Thanks for the guidance.. I think I have located the drain screw and the nipple on either side. Whith everything mounted when looking from the sides the screw stares at you and the nipples are pointed down. It was easier to locate on the left, and then I just went to the right side looking for the same setup.

I will try to drain them out today evening and see what comes out. Now to tighten them, is there a set number of turn ins or should I just turn untill it is fully shut.

Here's your carbs. With labels. Unfortunately in real life there's an engine mucking things up, but that's okay for draining the float bowls. Look at the pic and towards the lower center of the image you'll see a label "float bowl drain screw and drain." Something like that - the drain screw is a hex bolt (3mm, I think) and the drain is kind of a nipple behind the screw. Put a piece of clear plastic tubing on the nipple, and place the other end in a clear container (just so you can see what kinda junk may be hanging out in your float bowls). Get your hex wrench and turn the drain screw CCW until gas starts to flow out of the bowl through your tubing. It won't be a lot - seems like it at first, but it will stop. Tighten the drain screw back down, remove the tubing and head to the other side of your engine to do the other float bowl. Looks exactly the same and the procedure is the same. Again, don't forget to tighten down the hex bolt!!

Hope that helps - if you need pics of the near-actual proc, holler. My carbs are still floating around the garage and I can rig up a authentic reproduction of the draining process and take pictures.

Simon I'm going to make a guess that the fuel is not getting into your cards properly. When the engine runs for 10 seconds it uses up what is in the carbs or the fuel lines and then stops. If you leave it a while and it will restart this si because the carbs have had time to refill, but not at a fast enough rate to sustain a running engine. When a bike stand the fuel lines can dry out and leave a residue which blocks them. Clean the carbs and the fuel lines. Starting the bike is quite heavy on the battery which is not being re-charged, so I also guess that you have simply drained it and you should re-charge it. If it is an old battery you may find it doen't hold a charge very well and it might be worth investing in a trickle charger to keep it topped up. The charging system is vulnerable to failure on these bikes, but I would get the engine running reliably first and sort the charging system out next. Good luck

I do think you mean that your oil will be deluted with fuel and need to be changed.

piromedicx I believe that your petcock is like mine. Towards the back is the prime position. Straight down is run and froward is reserve. If you leave it in the back or prime position the fuel will flow into the carbs constantly even when the bike is not running. If your floats are stuck then the fuel can run into the engine and out the breather on the front cylinder. If this is the problem your fuel will be diluted with fuel and it needs to be changed. Just a guess.

I work this weekend but I am off the following weekend and if you are still up for the ride I would love the assistance. I am a little over an hour from Atlantic Ave Daytona Shores. I live off of US HWY 441 so its a nice easy ride. I have a nice grill and am sure I can talk the wife into a little cook-out bike work Saturday or Sunday.

What is the best way to plug the ports to run the carbs dry?

bumpy750 PIA if it still has the ears. Worst is getting them back in. Rebuilding the carbs is not too bad. Actual you just clean them as there is no rebuild kits, you have to buy individual parts that you need. Sounds like your petcock is bad. Plug the port on the petcock and the carb vacuum line and start her up. Should run till carbs run dry. Gas in the vacuum line is flooding engine. eBay has petcock kits-look for vn700 they are the same, about $20.00 plus shipping. You could buy an adapter plate and an after market petcock from Pingle. You could do as I have done and pull the guts out of your petcock and plug the vacuum port and the vacuum line from the carbs.

Yes I changed the plugs and oil already but I think I have a bad fuel line somewhere but I cannot keep my battery charged to find where and it isn't anything visible to me so far. Could it be leaking from the carbs or am I on the right track with a fuel line?

Edit: Okay I don't know if this is where the leak is coming from or just one maybe more but the hose that comes from the vacumn line? of the petcock (the one that is in the middle and goes down into the carb) was wet, whenh I pulled that line off I had gas coming out in a fairly decent amount. Is that supposed to happen? How tough is it to rebuild the carbs?

Cardinal Fang Ok this is weird and frustrating. I let it sit for about 10 minutes and then went back out to try it again. It wouldn't start and I noticed a puddle of gas dripping on the left side of the bike (if you are sitting on the bike it would be your left side) by the center stand. I am guessing a bad hose or something but the new issues is that I just had my battery recharged and now it is dead again. How can I trouble shoot a problem with the battery losing its charge? Any ideas on a hose that would be near the center stand? I didn't see anything obvious and now that the battery is dead I cannot try again to see where the gas is leaking from.
