bike rebuild 95% done. starting issue though. still can't get more than 1 backfire and starter draws battery down in matter of seconds. starter question thread shows saga. idiot question though...shouild my rear wheel turn freely,on center stand, in gear, with clutch pulled in? wondering if i have a clutch adjustment issue that might be hindering starting of bike. if in neutral maybe it doesn't matter. i keep squirting lube and cleaner down sparkplug holes hoping to loosen things up to help with starting...

looking for advice...mechanical skills are marginal. 2001 vulcan needs major surgery. left stide frame rail was cut to get at damper assembly. shaft was messed up from improper bolt removal(snapped off),stator cover missing chunks, clutch assembly and starter gear missing. with help from cousins who have 4 bikes in state of rebuild, the balancer shaft was removed and replaced along with balancer assembly and starter clutch gears. starter idler gear and bevel gear assembly put in. When booster was on bike, pressed starter switch and gears moved slightly and that was all. no clutch assembly installed yet. waiting on thrust washer. not sure if more needs to be put together to see bike turnover or not. hoping to get everything together and not have to pull engine.

Looks like I have more problems than I thought. After trying some Bar's stop leak yesterday I took the bike out for a ride in the evening. I don't ride much at night mainly because of the deer population around here. Anyway I noticed the headlight would dim on occasion. You seem pretty knowledgable about the electric system on this bike so I was wondering what you think this could be? Stator or RR.
On a side note, I thought about just parting this bike out rather than put money into it so I crunched some numbers and it looks like this is my ride for at least another year. I figure I'll just tear it down this fall and do a complete overhaul. That way I know for sure everything is tip top for next season and when I eventually sell it I'll have all the receipts for the rebuild. Figure I have to make the best of this situation.
Now I know why you say welcome to the madness

I just wanted to say thanks for helping me, you seem like one of the smartest and most respectful members here. I'm a certified small engine mechanic and you seem to know more about these bikes than I do, my only weakness is electrical and of coarse that was my problem. I don't want you to ever think that I'm being a smart ass or anything else when I posts on the forum, just trying to be helpful along with getting help. Not that there will be but if there is any problem that I can help you with just let me know. Thanks again Gordon:smiley_th

Have a stator question. Bikes not chargering. Stator unplugged, across 2 of any of the 3 leads, Ac voltage is 12 at idle, 70 at 4000 rpm. Plugged to the R/R, 10 ac volts idle/12 volts ac at 4000 rpm. DC voltage coming out of the R/R is 11.83 and same at the battery at any rmp. Is this a stator or a R/R problem. Is the R/R bringing the stator ac volts down to low for some reason when plugged in ? Or check else where. Thanks, Chuck

I keep reading every where that there is an oil filter screen on the bike other than the oil filter on the front of the bike. I have looked every where for it and cant find and bolts or bolt covers where it might be. I know on honda style engines they are inside the engine case but what about the kawasaki's.

    Hey hoss..
I read your thing about the brushes from australia and yes they are expensive.
I went out to my shop today and made one similar..What i used was braided wire called hypalon it is stainless steel coated copper stranded wire.. 6 awg..
what i did was take a 6 inch length of 1/4 or 3/8 pipe such as brake lines if you want different diameter brushes... then remove the insulation from the wire after cutting it 1/2 inch longer then the pipe.. now take the stranded wire and push it up inti the pipe ya might need to take off some strands for it to fit... shove it all the way in and crimp the top end.. leaveing 1/2 inch or less of wire out the other... and voila a brush... to renew it you snip the wire off then use a pipe cutter to cut back the pipe to expose the new bristles.. they work great...
i have a ton of this wire so if you would like to try it leave me your address and i will send some of it... take care.....
