MikeIronTyson’s ‘05 VN750 Restoration

Last October I had a low speed accident that defaced the last side of my bike pretty good so it gave me the push to pull the motor and repaint it, which turned in to stripping and repainting every metal part on the bike (still in progress). The tank is dented in a few places and since I got the bike I knew I wanted to repaint that too so will be doing that as well. Anyways I’ll be posting here some of my milestones as the project moves forward. Last night I actually was able to bolt a few parts together. I was going to wait until the engine was painted so I could just put the frame over the engine to make for an easier install but I had a super bad itch to wrench.

Frame, swing arm, centerstand, kickstand all painted with por 15 topcoat due to my lack of love for rattle cans (this took hours and hours, would powdercoat next time but buying a house soon so budget was tight). Final gear case, brake drum and rim - VHT roll bar & chasis gloss black

And here is the reupholstered seat, amazing job by my mom.

Last night I buttoned up the engine, and today I’ll be stripping her. I replaced balance dampers(they were in great condition upon discover), attempted stator mod but was not okay with the unknowns. I read up, spoke with the maker of the plate and was not happy with the answers. The instructions and videos make it seem like a trained monkey could do it, which it probably could but without machining the parts, I didnt feel comfortable with it’s dry fit so I just got a used cover and went back to stock. When the stator goes bad I’ll get it professionally done, until then if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Anyways, will be posting as it progresses.

looks great, can't wait to see it running and completely put together! that seat is a real winner, lucky to have such a talented upholsterer available to you

I didn't go with the stator mod, either. While I had my engine out for the dampers (not broken yet when I replaced them, but glad for the peace of mind) I just cleaned the stator with a bit of gas and a toothbrush to clean some of the lite oil sludge off of it. Reckon it looked to be in decent shape at 17k miles, should do me well for a while longer, especially with the MOSFET R/R I installed

Earshave+Rejet (38/135) – NGK Iridiums – MCCT Conversion – Slipstreamer S03 Windshield – Custom Extended Backrest – Custom Highway Bars – MOSFET R/R – LED Underglow – Volt+USB In-DashTwo-Wire & Blue-Wire Mod – Satin Black Engine Paint – Dampers Parts - Jets: Main=99101-393(#132 stock)/Pilot=n424-22 Pilot(#38 stock)

Engine

I got the engine painted and it turned out great, Black glass. All the bolts I wasn’t able to tape off I’m going to try and back out and take off the paint but for some reason I’m already seeing chipping problems which worries me so I might not. I went with Duplicolor engine enamel since I was reading the VHT has chipping problems and the duplicolor doesn’t require a heat cure. I’ll have it put in the frame and will hopefully fire it up this weekend.

OleDirtyDoc and TR_Irish like this.
