Lightbulb Turbocharger

I have a small turbocharger laying around and I was wondering is I can and if it would be safe to turbo my 86 VN750. Has anyone ever done this before? Any thoughts?

It has been said many times on this forum, anything is possible depending on how much money you have or mechanical/engineering ability, time, and really want it. I am not of that mechanical/engineering level so my answer would be, "I don't see why not." With that said I will ask you if you really want to do that to a cruiser style cycle with the upright seating setup or are you changing that too? Remember that it is your machine and if that is what you want then go for it if at all possible. Recently (a couple of years ago) someone decided to do away with the stator charging system and many thought that was near impossible but it was accomplished. Good luck with your decision and hopefully your success. I am looking forward to reading about it here.

and always remember, "Ride until you rot!"

Once it was all installed and making air, the work really begins, if the engine doesn't get destroyed before the tuning is right.

Here's a couple of points that may cause problems:

10.5:1 compression ratio, stock
ignition timing not adjustable, in stock form
turbo on a single exhaust pipe might create an imbalance in back pressure - 2 into1 pipe ahead of the turbo could be really tough.

yes the routing would be a problem.would need to keep boost down,as Spockster said, compression ratio is high and can't adjust timing.what was the turbo off of?that matters as well as if it's too big you'll have issues getting it to run right, maybe playing with the wastage will help.I personally haven't heard of one done on a Vn750, but many have done so on a sporty and all big twin Harleys. might be a good idea,if you have either the know how or $$$$$ to have an intake manifold fabbed up and switch to a single carb but either way, you're gonna end up with things sticking out of the frame. maybe flip the rear exhaust manifold (would need some fab work there as well, but has been done)so exhaust comes out on same side.would love to see it done and see performance reports

Someone put an alternator on the VN, so anything is possible The belt system from that could be adapted for a super charger?

Who knows about ignition. Third party ECUs and ignition systems might be able to be adapted. Not much engine management needs to go on aside from timing/spark. That's getting really complicated but it would be rad.

the only problem with the supercharger is that they tend to be a little bigger than an alternator and would get in the way of your left foot(also need to figure in the carb and intake pipes,as a draw through design is easier to tune than a blow through). and you'd need a guard for the belt

I figured if I switched to Efi it would work I calculated that I would need a 2.5in throttle body with 2x 250cc/min injectors. Itís possible tho a little pricey and would take time but with that fuel setup and running the turbo at 9.5 psi I would go from 60 to 100 horsepower! The one problem I would have tho is Iím not sure if the transmission or final drive could take that kind of power.
