wow,talk about target fixation! If you blink your eyes really fast it greatly reduces the disappearances,but immediately upon focusing it starts again,cool! weird ,but cool.

That is a very good reason, as a RIDER, you should never look at one thing, but always be constantly scanning the entire area around you. You can bet cell phone using car drivers are not. If they are actually looking at anything well enough to actually see it, it will be what is right in front of them.

It has long been known that car drivers do not see motorcycles, but in most cases, that is because they are not looking for them. Most car drivers are not professionals, and in most cases are not even remotely qualified to be operating such a large vehicle in traffic. They know just enough to keep the car going down the road. Toss in a cell phone, and even that ability goes away. It is up to the rider to take care of themselves. That's why you always ride like you are invisible, because for the most part you are. 99% of the responsibility of avoiding an accident lies with the rider.

Let me play devils advocate. I have seen alot of illussions on the internet. So im wondering how this illussion has anything to do with not seeing a motorcycle. Maybe I just dont understand.

Well.. I am no expert but here is what I took from it...

The middle flashing dot represented ANYTHING a potential driver could be FOCUSED on...

The dots that disappeared were only inches from the flashing dot yet you didn't see them from time to time.

It goes to show that it is sooo incredibly easy too miss out on your surroundings when you get focused on something specific...

A good motorcyclist is going to be defensive, aware, and constant scanning their surroundings... NOT focusing on anything specific..but everything...

but I can say from personal experience that in a car I feel more safe, comfortable, and relaxed and as such am much more likely to focus on a nice car I might see, or a sexy lady crossing the street..... and miss out on that motorcyclist coming down the street.

just my 2 cents.

That's really interesting Hoss, thanks for posting it. I've been guilty of missing a guy on a bike once. I did eveything right changing lanes: used a turn signal, checked my mirror, did an over-the-shoulder look, then eased into the next lane. I heard a loud horn and saw the bike swerve into the next lane over. Thankfully no one got hurt but I really did miss him completely. Still not sure how...
