What exactly can I expect from a poker run? How does It work Ect. They have them all the time here in zanesville, and I'd sooner look dumb here than infront of a bunch of guy's I don't know. That in it's self sounds goofy. But if your about to go for a ride you don't want the folks your going with to wonder if your a newbie rider or not. "Paranoia". Thanks for helping me not look stupid when I show up at one.

Generally, there is a predetermined route every body takes. Along the way there are stops. At each stop you pick up a card. You build your poker hand by getting cards at as many stops as possible. NOT a race, a casual cruise.

I've had fun on them.

So you get a map and such? The stops aren't like a scavenger hunt or anything are they? You just collect for the best hand? And at the end usually What? Prize, Dinner, Group Gathering?

You should ride in a group. usually with escorts to help with keeping everyone together. There will be volunteers at each stop, where you will draw a card. They will record it on your registration paper. The best hand at the end will get a prize. Most are for charity, so you can expect food, door prizes, auctions, and a casual day of riding. They should last about 60-100 miles, with stops along the way.
We enjoy them.

"Poker runs" are usually a "win-win" for everyone involved.

For you, it's a good excuse to get out and ride. You also get ample opportunity to meet other riders who are like-minded. As you meet other riders, you expand your riding opportunities and social contacts.

Since you run into all kinds of riders and bikes, it's a learning opportunity--about bikes, accessories, etc.

If you see a bike or an accessory that catches your eye, don't be shy to ask about it, as most bikers like to talk about their machine (duuuuuhhh!).

Obviously, you also support a charitable cause, which could always use the extra help.

If you haven't done much group riding, before you go to a poker run, you might do an internet search to bone up on the courtesies and protocols of group riding. There's a right way and a wrong way to do it.

I understand your discomfort. I have only been on one poker run. Do you have a friend to go with? That may be of some help. The run I went on I went by myself and just had to ask what was going on. I found the organizers of the run to be helpfull. You may want to be aware that most of the stops on poker runs are bars. You do not have to drink. You will see many that will just get there card and leave. Watch out for the ones that drink at every stop as they can be a danger to themselves and others.

I was just about to say this too. Sometimes most of the stops are at bars, and alot of the riders will have a beer at each place. Don't get caught up in that. Order a Coke or something if you want to hang out with them. You can end up drunk 1/2 way through the ride, which can be a bit of a problem. Also, watch out for the other riders late in the day who may have been drinking alot.

Have fun

Looks like most all aspects of a Run have been discussed.
Even the ones that are sponsored by a Hardley dealer usually get ALOT more than Hardley's showin' up. Even dualsports.

To find rides all around the world, check out this site of Runs, Rallies and Events called "Lets-Ride.com"

And Kanuck, as it's been said here MANY times, the only dumb question is the one ya don't ask. (or the one about how to buy a Hardley !! LOL)

Glad that you asked that question kanuck69. I'm hoping to go on a couple of group rides in the next month or so. I was in Zanesville on June 9th & 10th for my son to bowl in the youth state bowling tournament there. I saw lots of motorcycles out. One that caught my eye was a bike pulling a trailer with what looked to be a large wooden beer keg. That group might be an interesting one to ride with. Take care.

Are you from around Lancaster, OH? I am a former Chillicothe boy. Rode many miles on those rodes when I was a younger lad.
