Welcome to the Vulcan madness Tim.
Take boo at the "ten things" link below for an idea where to start working on the new-to-you scoot.

The Vulcan verses are a wealth of knowledge too.

well its not really new to me. i have had it for over 2 years and am on the third engine. first one the damn internal shifting linkage broke on me 4 days after i got it, sat for months before i finally put in a used 04 engine into it. that ran ok for a while started to make some rattle clicking noise that i now know is from bad acct but was told that its normal and to ride it, sigh very bad advice, was ridding it home one day and suddenly on the high way started to make a very loud almost banging noise, performed perfectly but for this noise that was impossible to ignore, was only a mile form home so rode it home and parked it. took it to kawasaki and they charged me a couple hundred just to tell me they cant figure out what it is without taking it apart. well i didnt currently have that kind of cash so i got another engine, this one is a 86, miles unknown but compression is at 170 165 so acceptable for only $200. any way this is the engine i am currently running in my 95, a engine thats 9 years older than the bike. really wish i had the tools and know how and i would fix the first engine but alas i dont have the tools....yet. so i am slowly fixing what i can to keep the bike. i love it, kinda small but can still keep up with my riding group just fine.

I say watch roaches videos, and do a full rebuild of your original engine. When your current engine is on it's way out, you can switch to the rebuilt, and be good to go for a long long time!

I have an engine I need to go pick up to rebuild, but work has been CRAZY. I should get up there to get it before it disappears on me .
