Hey, guys! Thanks for the replies! I live near Ramstein Airbase, Germany. Been here for about 3 years, got another 3 years left. I took an MSF course back in September, but will be taking the BRC II class in a few weeks/months.

So far, the bike's been great. At least the first two days. Starting last night, and then several times today, I've been having trouble starting it. The guy I bought it from put very few miles on it. In fact, he told me that one guy that had come to look at it left the key in the ignition without the owner realizing it, so the battery died. He mentioned it was a fairly new battery when this happened. So I hooked it up to a trickle charger for a night and it seemed to work well. Then the starting problem occurred after about 36-40 hours after taking it off the charger. I do know that it's a standard battery, not MF, so I'd already been thinking about replacing it anyways. Battery connections are clean.

The starting problem specifically is that the bike will start up with choke, run for about 20-30 seconds, then start to have trouble idling from that point. Soon after that, it dies and then refuses to turn over from there. The first time I had the problem, I removed the battery to make sure there was enough liquid in it. After putting it back in the bike, it started up and seemed to run decent. But the entire ride from there, about 15-20 minutes, things just seemed to be slightly off. So, as I said, I'm probably going to start troubleshooting from the battery first. If, after replacing it, there's still an issue, then I'll move on to the carbs and trying out Seafoam.

I've spent about an hour or so reading around on these forums about similar problems, so I'm glad I found this site. Hopefully my problem is common enough that the recommendations in related posts fix it. If not, I'll post further in the appropriate section. If anyone has any ideas other than what I've mentioned thus far, I'm happy to hear them. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum and to riding! I, too, just began back on May 3, 2012. I bought a 2005 VN750. I had a similar problem with starting, but I bought the bike from a local dealership so I made them change the battery out. I haven't had any problems since. They told me it was a new battery. I said, if that's the case, then you shouldn't have any problem getting the manufacturer to give you your money back. Now give me another new one so I can start riding! I also leave it on the trickle charger whenever I'm not riding. Good luck! Ride safe. Have fun!

Welcome to the group! nice to see another 06 owner out there.

replace that battery with a AGM type and you will shouldn't have any other problems. Iridium plugs help a lot with the idle....and if you still have trouble starting, I suggest doing the Pickup coil gap mod. That cured my hot start problem.
