Bought my Vulcan yesterday

I bought my 1986 Vulcan 750 yesterday and I'm stoked to have found this forum. I'm a new rider and I can already tell there's a wealth of knowledge here that I can use. I still have to register the bike so I've only driven it home from where I bought it but I love it already. I have a friend that's going to help me through going over the bike and giving it an oil change and checking for any issues. Are there common problems I should look for?

I'm also looking for saddlebags, preferably ones that won't make me mess with my tail lights. I don't need a lot of storage, can someone tell me what size or brand will fit without too much trouble?

I'm glad to be here and I'm sure I'll be on here quite a bit in the next few weeks.

Looking for:
Swingarm caps
Highway pegs or engine guard
PM if you got these for sale

I'm in same boat as you. I got my 2002 VN750 this past weekend!!

It's definitely a nice ride. I agree, this forum seems like it will help keep it running smoothly with well written DIY threads.

I plan on checking on the splines (thread found) and relocating the rectifier (thread not found yet) based on The Admiral's comments.

The knowledge members have shared and are willing to share will be a great benefit to all. I'm looking forward to be a part of it.

Congrats on your new '86 750! Welcome fellow new member.

Ratt’s Top 7 things to improve the VN750 ownership experience:

1. Lube the Splines … now.
Use a high moly lube (60% min.)

2. Get a maintenance free gel battery.
The VN750 demands a solid energy source. Get one.

3. Re-gap the ignition coil pick-ups to have a .020” clearance.
This mod will provide a more certain trigger to the ignition module. It theoretically advances the spark slightly, though probably negligible.

4. Clean and grease (di-electric grease) the batt(-) ground connection to the frame. Clean the batt(-) connection to the engine. Clean and grease the batt(+) connection to the starter motor in the front of the bike.
Clean and grease the stator wire bullet connections, and all R/R connectors.

5. Replace the stock spark plugs with iridium plugs. Part#: NGK DPR7EIX-9
Iridium plugs provide a more concentrated spark for more energy delivered to the air/fuel mix. Pow!

6. On a stock bike, run the air/fuel mixture screws at 2 to 2-1/2 turns.
Run the screws in all the way in until they seat (gently). Then run them out 2-1/2 turns. This is regarded by most as a good starting point for the correct air/fuel mixture.

7. Replace the ACCT’s with MCCT’s.
If an ACCT spring breaks or comes loose, you may not know it until your pistons mangle your valves. It’s risk assessment, and insurance.

Everybody has thier own list. This is mine.

Welcome to the group. It's a great bike to ride.

welcome aboard!
Post some photos of your new ride if you get a chance and fill out your profile with your location just for reference.

Be sure to use the Google search bar to find stuff like R/R relocation and other maintenance information....along with the verses section you should find just about anything you need.

If not, everyone here is willing to help fellow VN750 owners to keep you on the road.
Be safe! and enjoy
