Just got it and need some input

Illinios-
Just got my dream bike a 1985 vn700 beautiful shape road it home no problems then this morning went to start it to take it for a ride and no crank. Now i did ride a cb500 for some odd years and the first thing i checked was battery. Which is fine took it to autozone for the free test. second checked plugs and wires all good even replaced them to make sure still nothing. now i know that the starter might be a problem but im hoping to get some more input before i start going medevil on this poor bike.
To answer the questions
No gas smell so not flooding (yet)
cranks but wont turn
lights etc.. work
electric start button not a kick start
now i been looking online and cant seem to find that if this bike needs to be in certain places when starting IE clutch down choke up etc.. if anyone knows please let me know that to.
thanks for looking and hope to hear from ya soon!

Garage
First off, welcome to the forum...

The choke is up for on and down for off, clutch has to be in, or the bike has to be in neutral, side stand down.

But it sounds like your problems with no fuel are related to the vacuum petcock... check the vacuum lines, and you might have to rebuild the vacuum petcock.

Welcome to the forums.

Add to the list of bits in the electrical circuit the Start Stop switch. It catches me out far too often but my excuse is that I haven't got the fixed routine quite as habitual as I should.

Mine is a Red one.
Colour matched Bungee straps

Ok, I'm a little cornfused. First you said "no crank" then you said "cranks but won't turn". When you hit the starter button does it turn the engine but not start? Or does it not turn (crank) the engine? If your bike suddenly will not crank after riding it home yesterday and your battery checks out fine, then I'd look at possible engine ground and even corroded connections on the solenoid or the starter. Give us more info please. We'll help you figure it out...

Push the choke away from the rider to turn it off, toward the rider for on.

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!

Yes, please explain the "cranks but won't turn" thing. That is critical. Does the starter turn the motor over or not? Jerry.

thanks for all the input i replaced solenoid and starter and battery and got it running great. Though still aways to go before this thing is going to run smoothly now im dealing with it starting up just fine but dies in 10 seconds *timed it 5 times* but if i hold the throtle down it will stay running but TONS of white smoke pour out. I looked over the gas tank when replacing solenoid and starter and battery and found a kinked hose so i fixed it and then it started happening im thinking that i had a chunk of S**T clogged up?

White smoke eh? And lots of it? Huh. You said you rode it home a few days ago and it ran fine. No smoke then? Did you put anything in the fuel tank like a whole bottle of seafoam or something? Water makes white smoke... Could be water settled in the bottom of your tank or it could be a blown head gasket. That's about the only two things I can think of, something in the tank, or water/antifreeze, that will smoke white...

More than half a can?

Did you drain off the old gas?

Put fresh gas + SeaFoam in?

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!
