I like flames too, but would be happy with solid gloss black, with no graphics. I have an '02, and it is dark metallic green with silver side panels on the tank. The dark green actually looks black until you see it in bright sunlight. But I don't want to paint it myself, as I do not have the skills and equipment, and a professional motorcycle paint job in a solid color around here costs about $1000. Not gonna happen.
Before worrying about the paint, I would check/lube the rear driveshaft splines, and make sure the camshaft tensioners are ok. You will find plenty of information about both here. Before my '02, I also had a '93, both bought new, The '93 also had the driveshaft spline issue, but surprisingly enough, the cam chain tensioners never caused any problems in over 80,000 miles of use.
