this is probably the infamous ACCT acting up. YOu have several options to fix it, but going with a TOC manufacturing MCCT is the best solution. the metal shavings is still probably the balancers like the others have posted.

With an 86 and if you have metal flakes then it is the balancer dampeners. You do NOT have to tear the engine down. Just follow procedure for stator change and pull the rotor to get to the balancer. Check the inside of your main stator cover (not the round piece, but the one covering the statot and shifter shaft) you will most likely see scrapes on the metal

It could be the balance dampers or the ACCT's, normaly with damper failure the pieces of aluminum are accompanied by hard chunks of rubber. If it is the dampers, once you remove the stator/generator cover the balancer gear will probably fall out. You may have to replace the balancer bolt and washer along with the dampers, once the bolt backs out it gets pretty beat up.

When the ACCT's fail it just slacks the upper cam chain and it slaps the cavity inside the head removing small pieces of aluminum. The pieces will be very fine compared to the larger more coarse pieces from damper failure. If it is the ACCT's replace with MCCT's.
