Hello

Hello all. I have been lurking for a couple of weeks, so I thought I would introduce myself. I am from eastern Iowa, and I purchased an old barn found Vulcan two weeks ago. It has sat for 18 years, and never started. In these two weeks, I’ve cleaned the carbs, picked up a set of 142/42 needles (thinking I should get a 138 main), started the ear shave mod (still need to get the four filters), did the blue wire mod, and the two wire mod. Yesterday, I changed the oil (jet black) and flushed the radiator (milky and brown... hope it’s not the head gasket). I had it started for about 10 minutes when I unloaded it from my truck, so today, I will give the tank a muratic acid and naval jelly bath, finish rebuilding the petcock, and see how she runs! It doesn’t shift, but from what I have found here, the pawl spring might be the issue.

Welcome to the machine!

The shifting might only be because it's not moving. Does it shift into 1st and neutral? To get above neutral, the bike has to be moving above 10mph or so. It's the Positive Neutral Finder, keeps it from going into 2nd when you're trying to get N.

Many people only use three filters for the earshave, and put the carb vent up under the gas tank., either tied to the frame tube or on the cover for the fuel level sender on the bottom of the tank.

Thank you for the LED headlight answer as well. I took a video of what the shifter is doing, but it seems I cannot upload it. It is thankfully stuck in neutral. It feels like it would down shift enough to engage 1st gear, but it doesn’t. There is no horizontal play to speak of, and the shifter springs back how I would assume it should (good pressure).

Apparently you cannot edit your posts? Here is the new bike, I named her Maria. The Harley is Juliet (and the dog is Romeo).

Should be an edit button, first one with the other quote/reply buttons. But if you're on a phone, I'm not sure.
