Splitting the case, what should I replace?

Well boys the time is now.

Im splitting the case on friday to repair a broken shift rod. While im in there, I will certainly need to replace other things in there, gaskets and such. I have a 90 750. Could someone who has done this job before give me a list of stuff that I should get to while inside? Thanks!

while I have not done the job, a couple of things come to mind.

1. balance dampers!
2. balance dampers!
3. balance dampers!
4. check water pump and seal
5. did I mention balance dampers?

other than that, I cant think of anything unless you see something worn

Check your stator. Hell, unless I could verify it was near new I'd change it out with a high quality rewind or new OEM one. Stator's are hands down the number one reason we pull our engines. Given the overheating you described, I'd heave the heads inspected by a machine shop.

Besides all the obvious gaskets, you will need Silicone to put the 2 halves back together. I think I used a Blue or Black Permatex for that. Get new exhaust gaskets, also might as well replace the shift shaft seal. The small metal coolant tube that is on the left side top has an o-ring in it that will probably leak, be prepared to replace that. Mostly small stuff that can bite you later.
And for heavens sake while you have it apart remove the rear wheel and lube the splines.
