need advice on motor

When I drained the oil to change it this past weekend I found a lot of metal in the oil so I am guessing something is about to go kaboom. I am trying to decide wether to find a used motor, sell the bike as is or part it out.

If I decide to look for a used motor what would be a reasonable price for one and since I do not have a place to work on it beside the street in front of the house I need to have someone do the swap for me what would be reasonable price for labor to do the swap?

Thanks for any input

Travis

Damn, that's a real shame. How has the motor been running lately? Shaking a lot? May be dampers, which is an engine-out repair, unfortunately.

Also, where are you located?

I am in Huntington WV roughly 3 hrs from Columbus oh, & Cincinnati Oh and 2 hrs from Lexington KY

no shaking no funny noises etc.

I have another motorcycle that I am going to work toward getting to ride this summer it needs tires and probably a carb cleaning. the vulcan if I decide to keep it will be a winter project.

What kind of metal was it? What color was the metal? Was there any rubber bits as well?

No vibrations. Could be something as easy to fix as the clutch (if the metal bits were clutch plate material).

I've seen engines from $250-600, and complete bikes about the same range. Local shop has one they're parting out on craigslist, fairly complete in the pics. I'm about 70 miles north of you if you take Rt2 or the Ohio side.

What color was the metal? Gold, silver, darker reddish brown-black? Did you sweep a magnet through the oil? Did you pull the oil screen?

Unfortunately, it does sound terminal with shavings circulating in the oil. I wouldn't think clutch material would flow through the main oil filter, pulling the oil screen might tell you more. Pics of that might help us advise you.

Clutch steels would be magnetic, but you should have had major clutch slippage before then.

Are you talking about Lemon & Barrets? I talked to them a couple weeks ago when I saw the craigslist ad (before I found this issue) and they offered me the whole bike for $200 and when I called them yesterday the price was $350 for the whole bike. I may call them back in a couple weeks and see what they say then maybe offer them 250

I will try to strain the oil and get a pic of the shavings this weekend. all of the shaving came out thru the drain plug and I did remove the screen and when I noticed the shaving coming out in the oil I ran a magnet thru it. I have not pulled the filter yet I quit when I saw what was coming out the drain plug.

It sounds pretty bad from your descriptions. If you saw that much while draining, it's pretty bad. Does the oil smell burnt?

Yep, Lemon & Barrett, looked like the Mineral wells shop. I'd call back and ask to talk to the $200 guy. The bike could've been missing a side cover and didn't have any add-ons that I recall, also had a broken rear turn sig.

well I have a bigger problem now...my daily transportation just quit running so now I need to get that fixed before I can buy the bike in mineral wells/parkersburg.....hopefully it will still be there in a couple weeks(not holding my breath)

If I can find a motor in the next couple of months I plan on replacing gaskets and orings on the motor before I have it put in. what are the recommended gaskets and orings to replace?
