88 making some noise

Hi I have a 88 vn750. Just recently it has started to make a slapping/ rapping noise coming from about an inch below the base of the front cylinder and about an inch in front of it. Just changed my oil and found no metal fragments in the filter or the screen. The only thing out of the ordinary was a few pieces of grey rtv like material. Anyone have any ideas on what the noise could be? The motor only has about 20xxx miles on it. I am running rotella 15-40 and a fram ph1060 filter. When the bike starts up the noise is not there but once up to operating temp it seems to start to appear.

Look up the ACCT / MCCT (automatic cam chain tensioners / manual cam chain tensioners) on this site. Your ACCT's are likely wearing out and you have some options on how to remedy that available on this site.

The frame is an 86 the motor is out of an 88. The pipes are custom. It's definitely a 750

I have already rebuilt the acct. maybe I'll swap the mccts off my 86 motor over to this motor. Just seems to me that the chain shouldn't be in the spot where the noise is coming from

Forgot to mention the noise is coming from the side of the bike in the picture. Cam chain tensioner is on the other side of the bike. And the noise seems to go away once the bike gets over about 1200-1300 rpm

does the motor vibrate at all?is the nnoise in the left side towards the bottom? I'm asking cause of the rtv-like particles you found.sounds like the crankshaft balancer bushings are coming apart.and unless someone painted the motor,it's a 700 motor,as the 750's(86 and up)we're silver.the only black one's with polished fins were the' 85 700's

The noise is towards the top of the case. Pretty much under the front engine mount. I painted the motor when I swapped it. I'll have to pull the cover and see what the balancer looks like. And now that I think about it it does have a slight vibration to it

gotta pull the motor to check the balancer bushings as they are on the stator side.does the bike vibrate at all?these bikes are pretty smooth and if you have noise plus vibration that usually means balancer bushings are bad.do you feel any vibration in the bars at all?

Yea I feel a slight vibration. I was hoping to try to keep the motor in the bike but I guess back out it comes. Thanks for the insite.
