Straight pipes and performance.

Hey guys.

I would like to get a slightly meaner sound out of this thing, so will be changing the exhaust.

Currently I am waiting for a "new" set of headers to arrive. The plan is to remove the original, including goats belly and simply run the header from the rear cylinder under the bike to the right hand side. I'm considering ending it in two 17 inch turn-out straight pipes with 8 inch baffles.

Assuming I do the headers properly and get them the same length, how much would this harm performance? Would the baffles provide adequate back pressure? And would a "balance pipe" provide any benefit?

Might lose some low end torque, and you might need to re-jet the carbs, after reading the plugs. The baffles will help on both. Just how much, I'm not sure.

How about a 2-into1 setup? Same style pipes but perhaps a slightly larger diameter.

Can't say for sure, but anytime the exhaust is opened up, fuel mixture will lean out to some degree.

It's really a lot of guessing unless you slap it on a dyno to properly read the a/f mixture, and tune accordingly. It's lean from factory, anyways, so opening the pipes up probably will affect that more.

well to rejet the carbs for custom pipes it will be trial and error. if you buy aftermarket pipes made for vn750s you can order the jets on ebay that fit your pipe.
