Photos: Weird stuff in Oil Screen

Hi All,
I'm prepping for a stator replacement and off-bike TuxedoMod and addressing a few other things along the way. When draining the oil the other day, I pulled the screen and found what looks to me like stray bits of silicone? Some the same material is found the the top right of the 2nd image as well.

Any thoughts? I read something that small bits of plastic could be a sign that balance dampers need to be replaced, but that those bits are black. This was yellowish, and spongy.

thats what it looks like to me, excess sealant

on 2nd look, it seems as tho the outer most cover, which is usually sealed by an o-ring around its perimeter, was sealed with a sealant as well/instead. make sure you get the o-ring for that cover as well

Thanks. And yep- ordered every gasket for the replacement, including the cover o-ring.

Agreed, probably white silicone that has yellowed.

Excess silicone sealer can push rubber o-rings/gaskets out of place when it cures.

As seen, excess sealer can end up in bad places. Bad juju to use silicone on carbs, automatic transmissions, hydraulic pumps, etc.

Lol ... Took a Ford 351-M apart and it had silicone donuts as big as a quarter on every pushrod. Oil pump screen had a big silicone cookie covering it. All from overzealous sealing of the valve cover gaskets, which were also pushed out of place by the cured sealant. They must have put a 3/8" bead on every surface ... both sides of the gasket, valve cover, head.

The shiny silver flakes might be a concern. That's not normal wear and tear.

Also, expect the possibility of replacing the damper bushings. It's just one more bolt, with left-hand threads. Did the engine feel smooth or vibrating?

I agree, one more bolt and take care of a potential issue in a week (well, that would be my luck if I didnt change them when doing the stator)

Maybe once I get 'er opened up I can verify the cause of the silver flake(s).

Yep- the plan, in addition to TPE stator and off-bike TuxMod, is to lube front and rear splines and replace balance dampers.
