Mystery cooling and heating problem

Anyone got any ideas? Never bothered to replace the thermostat during the rebuild, since there wasn't much of an issue. Guess I should have.

What the actual farley?

How the heck does a roofing nail get in there? Dropped in a drain pan by accident? But then how does it get through the radiator cores to the t-stat?

Somebody tried to block the 'stat open?

I give up.

That's a long roofing nail ... Anybody close by tear off three layers of old roof recently?

Yeah, I'm dumbfounded. Looks like it was dropped through the cap area, and lodged in the stat.

im gonna guess someone in the past stuck that nail in there to block the 'stat open. I cant think of any way for it to have gotten in there without disassembly of the housing..

Pretty wild. Sabotage or dumped from a drain pan, that's all I got.

Damn! That's about the weirdest thing I've heard of being found in an engine. 2nd place might be a carb screw embedded in a piston, engine still ran fine, but had a noticeable thump-thump-thump.

Hopefully, that's the only foreign object in there.
Might want to check to see if you can find anything else in there just in case.

Don't take my word for it. I'm just a foolish newbie.
When in doubt, just know that I am only joking around.

OK, now a real mystery (or maybe not).

I replaced the stat and rad cap, all hoses tight, overflow going to the bottle, vent going out.

Rode to work, warmed it up nice, parked it.

Went out 2.5hrs later, opened the rad cap, and got a pressurized POP sound. Nothing gigantic, but definitely pressure of some sort.

Rad cap is same pressure rating as the old one 0.9bar,so I don't know why it would pop like that.

Could the cooling system have been at 0.7 bar, not enough to lift the seal in the cap?

yea, it could have had some pressure in it still, but not enough to open the vent
