Doc has about double the shim thickness I used, it's a big lockwasher about half as thick.

Wasn't a big problem, ran it over a year with no shim, but was trying to eliminate that as a source of noise when my sticky valve sneezed. The Uni also still slightly touches on that side. Thought my carbs were seated, but I'll check next time.

my Uni's touch a little bit more than Spocksters, but I didnt worry about shiming mine, as I got the ones with the black plastic endcap, so even if they did move, there is no noticable noise from them.

and yes, my filters and my carbs are fully seated

That's an interesting observation. Mine are the traditional K&N red.

1986 VN750 27k miles
1999 EN500 32k
1983 GL650i in pieces. Someday it will ride again.

The end cap had some tilt on it before I did the shim.

Could maybe tilt the filter slightly, then tighten the clamp.

Been a while since I had a new K&N, they were white gauze until you sprayed the filter oil on them. The K&N filter oil I have is red, been using it on the Unis.

Maybe you're misunderstanding. I find working on machines, especially vehicles, to be a lot of fun. But only if I can do it right. I like to turn wrenches, handle parts, clean parts while I have everything apart, lay the parts out neat and orderly, pay attention to every last detail, in other words, be very OCD about it. Just taking something apart to fix it and throwing it back together as quickly as possible (put it back in service) is no fun at all. That's work, and you should get paid for that. If I don't feel like working on something, I stop and wait till I do. Many people think that the only fun you can have with a motorcycle is riding it. I'm about 50/50, ride/work on it. Considering all the customizing members here have done that did not make the bike run one bit better, and may have even made it function worse ( I mean, a hardtail? you've got to be kidding) tells me that I am not the only one here that does more wrenching on their bikes than they absolutely need to do. I managed to get the whole thing apart and back together without a single problem, no profanity, and no throwing tools and parts. Life is too short to spend it in a hurry. And now that I don't have to work for a living any more, I am never going to be in a hurry again, unless it is while on the way to the finish line at the local dragstrip.

It looks like those filters don't touch by a whole lot. Some car door edge trim from Pep Boys around the bottom tank seam would likely solve the problem. Shouldn't matter if they touch that. Remember the Vulcan engine is rubber mounted, and it is going to move around slightly in the frame while running. I put black molding on my black tank. You have to look close to see it. But that unfinished edge bothered me.
