My VN750 seems like it's overheating...

For the past 3 years or so, my VN750 has been relegated to backup bike duty in favor of a new V-Strom 650 with FI, ABS and a 5+ gallon fuel tank. However, I still take it on 50-100 mile trips every 4-6 weeks just to make sure it's in operating condition.

My V-Strom is currently offline for some accessory repairs, so I've been commuting on my VN750 again. I noticed that it's getting a lot hotter than I remember it doing - almost to the red zone - after 40 minutes of riding. Friday it was stop and go traffic in 95F weather, but today morning was pretty cool (65F and misty) and it happened again. The fan seems to be weak, I can hear it but I remember it being louder.

Any suggestions? Something gunking up the fan, maybe? How do I get at it?

You can try spaying the fan with some WD40.

You might also want to flush your coolant and put some fresh stuff in there.

But "almost to the red zone" isn't the same as "in the red zone" it's technically not over heating.....yet.
