Issues after rebuilding

Well I rebuilt the top end found out I had a bad starter clutch and inginter as well as a few other things including cams/stripped spark plug hole in the head. Well I got it all finished and its not working out correctly. Motor spins really slow kinda like its tight. Battery works with another VN750 with no issues. It was fully charged and when trying to fire it I smelt something burning electrail issues. I did just put the igignter on the coil bypass cirucit and grounded the wires so I verified they were good and they are. Look down at the starter and I see smoke. I just rebuilt the starter last year with a rebuild kit as well as replaced the solenoid. I'm thinking maybe the ground for that isn't right hence its smoking. I was able to pop start it and when looking over a few things while it was running I noticed out of spark plug which got retapped was white smoke coming out. Maybe the tap isn't seated correctly?? I had a machine shop do the work.... I'm running out of ideas here. ANy thoughts?

Can I put a larger size wire on it? If so what's the biggest it could be? I'm thinking maybe the wire is burnt out if that's possible.

For starters....the thicker the better....get it ?..."for starters"....its safe to go up one gauge on ALL the wiring....make sure ALL of your grounds are clean and tight too...thats a common issue...

I'm thinking of getting either a 4 or 2 gauge wire for the two grounds and two going to the starter. What's the stock size?

UPDATE:

I found out that the white smoke coming from the spark plug tunnel is oil. Looks like I have a leak so I am going to try replacing the seals for the tunnel and see if that fixes that issue. I have a leak on the front head of oil but need to pull the radiator to verify.

I think my starter is **** cause when pop starting the bike it fires up and goes no issues. I verified grounds and wires and everything seems fine. I'm going to cough up the money for a used starter here in a few weeks and see how that goes.

starters can be rebuilt. most common problems are probably the brushes.

I rebuilt it last year but I don't like the smoke coming off the starter. Not sure the cause of it as the wires are tight going to the stater.

most likely, the smoke is from burning brushes in the end.
Where is the smoke coming from exactly?
If the whole body of the starter is smoking and excessively hot, then you may need to replace it.

I still tend to believe a rebuild is in order rather than a replacement.
