Another guy with engine vibration........grrr

Sorry- I think I have read through every "vibration" piece in here and it most likely points to having the balance dampers replaced. However, if I am missing something and an easier route is possible, I'm all for it!

1991 VN750
about 58,000 miles on her
Engine vibration from about 2500 rpm to 5000 rpm then it quits. Vibrates so much in between there that it felt like my feet were going to go to sleep and my speedo would vibrate right off.

Bought the bike in Nov. so I haven't really had it out till today (damn Iowa winter). I plan on changing oil, cleaning air filters, new plugs and plug wires.

Just looking for a likely culprit. If it's the dampers I will likely have to take the bike to a shop. I just can't follow the Vn750 manual worth a darn to try and do it myself.

Thanks for any help.

I'd have to agree with it being dampeners. They are probably still mostly there so it takes revs over 2000 to get the cyntrifical force enough energy to vibrate things. Over 5000 rpm and the engine could be spinning so fast it is somewhat self balancing.

I realize the higher speed end may be a little hard to understand but something rotating that is only a little out of balance will mostly self balance if spin fast enough. Those of you who have used a high speed lathe have seen this.

By riding on you will eventually may have it all totally let go with disastrous results.

A second but unlikely potential. One cylinder is cutting out between 2500 and 5000 rpm but I doubt this is your problem. I'm not sure your engine can even run at 5000 rpm on one cylinder.

I would not run the engine much or at all.....
You might consider trailer-ing it to the shop.....
to prevent the nubs being sheared off the Balancer (flywheel of sort of which the Balance Rubbers are mounted....the rubbers dampen vibrations from rotating gear).

....just sayin'
