Knock, knock

My engine (2002 VN-750) has a slight knock while warming up but smooths out shortly. What the H E double Hockey Sticks, over?

X3 but is it a knock or a tick? That's important to define.

Tick or knock? It is most definitely a knock! Like hitting a BF rock with a hammer.

I just recently changed oil, drained it through a screen to check for rubber particles and also checked the screen, both clean. BTW it's only got 13k on the odometer.

If you think it could be a rod bearing... usually, removing the plug wire from the bad cylinder makes the knock go away. In this case, both plug wires. They will start and run on one cylinder.

Harbor Freight stethoscopes were under $5 when I bought mine.

Another possibility, if the internals are gummy ... dirty wrist pins causing piston slap until it warms up. But really, my tensioners make a deeper toned sound than I expected, and they aren't even bad yet. Just a bit of noise in the first minute or less on cold starts.

Knock Knock

Thanks for all the input from Y'all. Come to think of it, the knock didn't start during warm up until the real cold weather set in. Maybe I should change the type of oil I am using, Rotella 15W-40. I had previously used Castrol Syntec exclusively in my 1986 454-LTD and it had 89K miles on it when I sold it, and it was still running like a Swiss Watch.
