I'd say my riding season is over now...

Has been around 30 degrees in the morning here for the last couple days. Today the bike was really struggling to turn over until it started. Got about a mile down the road before i heard a "slapping" sound. Then within another mile the bike started to vibrate harshly. With the clutch in, it wasn't noticeable through the frame (as noticeable at least). Pulled over to see at least a couple quarts worth of oil finish draining out of a place where there should not be a drain hole...
I haven't had a chance to look at it close yet, but does this sound like anything you guys have gone through before? should i start looking for motors, or is a rebuild usually possible?

Thanks Click image for larger version

That doesn't look promising. Would need to see snapshot of where the new drain hole is...

Yea, Someone on this site had their balencer tear through the case about 6 months ago and your pict looks a lot like their pict.

Not if you shop Ebay for those parts. Should be quite a bit lower.

Riding season is just starting here, and I have my carbs out and disassembled. Great.

Your picture and description look and sound like a broken engine case by the damper. Left front of the engine. if there is a hole in the case, you will need another engine, or at least another left engine case, but that requires a TOTAL engine teardown. If you really must have a Vulcan 750 (and I do understand the attraction) your best bet is a used engine, or just get another Vulcan in good condition, and keep the one you have as a parts bike. I found out with my Yamaha XT225 that a parts bike is a good thing to have.

I am a motorcyclist, NOT a biker.

Left engine case around 100 bucks
Stator cover 50 to 100 bucks
Dampers 40 bucks
Head gaskets 35 x 2
Base gaskets 8 x 2
Damper gear if needed 40 to 80
Oil and filter 30 bucks
Antifreeze 10 bucks
And that's if you just use gasket sealer for the rest
You do the math

If you get a used engine I would recommend replacing the dampers before you install the engine just for peace of mind

I agree. I would also do the Tuxedo Mod and a TPE stator at the same time, regardless if you decide to go with a second engine or not.
