Need advice

I have a 1998 vn750. I have had it for a year, and have put about 5k miles on it. I have pulled the carbs three times in the last year. A week ago I was riding to work and the bike had a loss of power and a loud banging and scraping noise came from the engine. When I purchased the bike it had a salvaged title and I believe a previous owner has down some work on it. I am concerned that it is a piston or a rod and that the engine will need to be rebuilt. Any ideas if I am thinking in the right direction? If it needs to be rebuilt does anyone have any ideas of how much it would be for me to do myself?

This sounds like the balancer dampers.

Is that something difficult to fix? I have never pulled an engine and have only done basic stuff with my bike.

You need to pull the engine, just to get behind the stator cover for the left one, on the right side you can pull the clutch cover to replace them. To make sure it's the balancers just drain the oil and look for rubber in the oil

Scraping noise is not good, hope you stopped riding it. Might be one of the gears that have been know to come loose and it's grinding through the case.

I haven't ridden it since. I did start it directly after it happened and it wouldn't idle and I had to keep revving the engine to keep it alive, all the while the banging and scraping noise was happening.

2x^ drain the oil & inspect the screen. See what's in there.
If you see black bits (rubber) then it is most likely the balancer dampers as stated above.
It's not a bad job to do & the engine doesn't need to come completely out.
You just need enough clearance for the bottom bolts that are blocked by
The frame.

If your lucky, there won't be any real damage. Good luck!

So I drained the oil and did not find any rubber. I did find quite a few pieces of metal. I noticed that most of them were bronze colored and were magnetic. I Didn't know if that would help anyone identify what might be wrong.

Well, that sounds like more than just balancers. Maybe crank shaft, or rod bearings. Look up roaches videos in the engine stickies
