Oil screen particles

Removed the oil screen for the first time today....while doing an oil change.

For the most part, it looked clean, but it did have some green-looking specks in it. Not many, just some....here and there.

Any ideas what these are coming from--anyone???........

It's most likely pieces of gasket/sealant from motor assembly.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. There's going to be pieces of 'stuff' that eventually dislodge, which is the reason for the screen.
Now if ya start seeing alot of metal pieces, then it's worry time.

How many miles are on your bike ('05, right?)

Thanks, Hyper....

Yes, that's correct. The bike is an '05 model.

I'm the second owner. Don't know if the first owner cleaned the screen--or not.

Current mileage is like 5,235. When I changed the oil the first time (3,000 miles back), I didn't know about the screen.

I only saw one small piece of metal shaving on the screen.

I had little green pieces in mine too. Not uncommon to have very small metal flakes either. If you ever see large, black pieces that look like rubber or plastic, then you've got problems. Those would be chunks of the bushings holding the balancer in place. Enough of those fall out, the balancer takes off like a shot and usually takes out a big chunk of the crankcase with it.

I usually rinse it off with paint thinner-let it dry and pop it back in. I hear brake cleaner works well too.
