Intermittent starting problem

Hey all, see what you guys think. First I did not store it over winter and rode fairly often. The other weekend I went for a long ride - over 100 miles. The next day it barely turned over. Tried a half hour later and it started right up. Upon checking the battery, the negative clamp was loose. Problem solved right? Nope. Rode all week to work. Friday morning, same thing. All clamps tight and check connections. No corrosion. Battery load tested fine @ 90% capacity and charging system is fine like 12.8 - 13 at idle and 14.2 at high rpm. Oh and the battery is MF and was installed last September. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Jeff

I had just replaced them last year so I hadn't considered them a possibility. Plus when it wouldn't start, it mimicked a dead battery, barely turning over and than the backfiring and just the starter clicking.

You said your terminals were loose? Did you clean the ends before you tightened them? I'd be tracing the wiring starting with the battery ground. This screams of a loose or corroded connection.

Fergy, yes I cleaned them before tightening. They looked fine before and I applied some dielectric grease before reconnecting. Are there many connections or perhaps hidden ones I did not see that I should look for? I had checked the starter and relay and cleaned and greased those connections too.

Did you check where the Neg cabe is attached to the fraim. Have seen that break before.
There is a small wire that will supply ground but not enough to start the bike.

That's a good point Chad. You need to check continuity from cable ends to ends to make sure there's not a break or weak point. Weird but it happens.

Ok, believe it or not my MF battery which I installed last September has been determined to be faulty. That's eight months and not a whole lot of riding during that time. One thing though, the negative clamp kept coming lose. Tighten it and in no time lose again. The shop was able to replicate the problem. He started it and shut it off twice and on the third try he said it barely turned over. Put the meter on it and it was showing almost nothing.

Has anyone else had any trouble with these MF batteries? Oh yeah and they gave me grief about having put that in in the first place. They have placed a standard battery in there now at $50 so I'm not sure whether I will just yank it or let it go for a while. I told them what you folks have found here with the shoddy electrical system and needing the extra cranking amps so it starts the first time. They said ahhh ya don't need that, these reg. batteries are all you need.

Oh the joys.....
